yeah this hazard light “law” isn’t something in the US. It is a good practice.
I’ve used it before but also in these situations the driver needs to be aware and keep distance from the driver in front as best as possible until they are not the last car.

I rounded a blind corner once and saw the traffic slow down. Put on my hazards and kept about 100ft between me and the last car. Sure enough a semi comes blazing around the corner but sees me and starts to slow down. I was then able to creep up to the car in front of me with the semi allowing enough room to slow down.

If I didn’t do this, I would totally have been rear ended. But this isn’t something taught for getting your drivers license.

It's a nice courtesy, but it's no substitute for people paying attention, and it should absolutely not be necessary.

I think the only thing I really take issue with is that you originally gave the taco partial blame for not putting on hazards. It would have been nice, but I don't think that transfers any blame to that person. This is squarely on the driver of the Subaru.

So now that the bed is removed, he's obviously gonna be putting bigger tires on. How big can he go in the front without trimming or rubbing?

Hazards wouldn't have helped, that car wasn't even slowing down till it nosedived with a sea of red lights in front. Taco and seemingly everyone else were capable of watching the road.

i have noticed a fair share of VERY aggressive semi drivers out there, going more than 10 over through high traffic areas
they should lose their damned special license just for that, punish them

If that poor guy in the Tacoma drives like me with one eye on the rear view mirror, he saw it coming at the last second and nothing he could do. Bam! Crunch!

i agree with this in its entirety, because of the ever-high-use of distractive electronics in the vehicles these days, fellow mortals CANNOT ever be trusted to be paying attention to surroundings at all times, going 15 to 20 over posted limites, ... even i will guilt shame myself for being distracted and to self oh crap! pay the fck attention already

Sorry, but I beg to differ. From a purely legal standpoint, the Tacoma driver did nothing wrong and the accident will be blamed 100% on the driver that hit him. Points to ponder:

    1) The Tacoma driver clearly slowed down and a very reasonable rate (no panic stop) well in advance of the traffic in front of him.

    2) The Subaru driver clearly was going too fast for conditions and braked waaaay too late.

    3) The Tacoma hit the truck in front of him due to the sheer force of the impact from his rear. Nothing he could have done would have prevented him from hitting that truck.

    4) No law states that you have to use your 4 ways in this situation. Would it be nice? Yes. Would it be advisable? Yes. Do I do it? Yes. But it is not required.

    5) And the most beautiful thing: There's a clear video of the whole thing. Mike drop.

I would venture to guess that the Subaru driver was ticketed for (at minimum) Speed Unsafe for Conditions, Following too Closely and likely - Distracted Driving.

PS: I'm just waiting for the first idiot to suggest that a heavy duty rear bumper would have prevented any damage.

is it impossible that the Subaru brakes 'failed'? crap happens!
i've had a Corolla or two that the brakes 'failed' ...luckily i was just backing out of the driveway when the lines ruptured :(

are you high or drunk?or both?

Might as well take it a step further. Blame the Tacoma driver’s parents. If they used protection, the Tacoma driver would have never have existed, never bought the truck, never would have been on that road, and therefore there would be no accident

So by your definition, we should all stop and see what the driver behind us is doing..... get as grip. The only fault here was the idiot not paying attention, WTF!!!!

I'll admit in this situation the hazard lights would probably not have helped. I think I might have even said that up front but I still think they should have been used just on the off chance the Subaru driver brakes screen a split second earlier. I stand by the assertion the taco driver bears some blame for hitting the car in front, while I don't think he would (or should) get ticketed for it, if he had stopped further back the damage would have been reduced overall in my opinion.
Glad we all had this conversation. I'm out.

Lmao! Really? He got shoved into that car by the dipshit in the Subaru. How far back should he have stopped? 100'? 200'?

There are lights, bulbs, out on the market that will strobe several times when the brake pedal is pressed before staying on. Personally, I find them irritating. Especially in stop and go traffic.

That being said, the third brake light was required in the US in '86. Ya, 1986. As studies had shown that the high mounted brake light was proving to get driver's attention sooner and react accordingly.

What would be nice imo are brake lights that show me how hard you're braking. Something similar to the mustang's sequencial directionals; only they stay on with the brakes.

When he gets plowed by a Subaru at just shy of full highway speed, he should be sure to go out of his way to tell the car in front he is partly to blame for rear ending them.
