They were pretty pushy when trying to sell me extended warranty. Told me if one BSM sensor goes out, it will pay for itself. I said no thanks, ill take a chance. Also tried to sell me all this diamond kote protection bullshit for the interior and exterior. Ive been detailing my own cars since i was 16, hard pass.

You should only get True Coat. I heard from an expert that it comes from the factory and there's nothing the dealer can do about it.

There ya go .. They tried to sell me the (Not sure if it was called the same thing, but) but the 'Interior Protection' for $2-300 ..
You can buy a BIG can of Scotch-Guard for $15.00 and do the exact same thing they would have done.

I paid $1300 for the top-of-the-line extended warranty in '16 when I bought my '17 which covers practically anything aside from normal wear and tear items (brake pads, etc., of course). I have the slow timing cover leak (covered based on my paperwork) though i'm going to wait until I get closer to my 100k expiration to since it does appear to be getting (slowly) worse but not yet to the point i'm adding oil and figure i'll get it done as close as possible. That job alone more than pays for my extended warranty so I guess this time I'm grateful to have the warranty so I don't have to either pay for the repair or just deal with adding oil for the life of the truck as it ages...

My warranty is through CNA National, and I've used them once in the past and claims / processing was pretty easy by extended warranty standards. worth checking out if you decide to go that route later on.

Just got to be extra careful. The dealership for my Wife's 4Runner tried to sell us the "official Toyota extended warranty." The pamphlet even has the Toyota logo and says official and everything! That is, until you read the fine print and you realize it is just a 3rd party VSP that even states that it isn't associated with Toyota and that by official they mean that, THEY officially cover Toyota vehicles. Not that it is Toyota's official coverage product.

Read the fine print too - Yotas platinum has a shit list of stuff it doesn’t cover - gaskets and hoses are on it - seals may be on it too.

Not sure if they’d get real anal about parts vs. labor but to be safe assume they will jerk your wallet out any chance they can get.

You're right ... I've never gotten that either.... It's like 'So.. You'll cover (say) a U-joint, having no idea how much I may have abused a drive train .. But you won't cover a radiator hose that basically just sits there ..' I don't get it.

Wow, I wonder how that happened. When I bought my truck, 'Mr. Warranty' told me that they HAD to go through the check-list, otherwise I might come back and sue them later saying the the extra 'warranties' weren't offered to me. I'm guessing that was probably total bullshit. Even at that .. Saying 'NO!' after he got 3 words out on every item on the list, I still got out of there in about 45-50 minutes.. (I was paying in full) ...

I just did my 30k service in early November which means my 3/36 is nearly up. I'm not sure how that became public knowledge, but it did. Starting mid November I've averaged one voicemail and three pieces of snail mail, per day, trying to sell me on a new warranty. On Monday I found a flyer stuffed in my doorjamb somewhere in between all the landscaper business cards.

Last night I had a dream that I went full Liam Neeson and my life's mission was to track down every warranty sales person. It was a good dream.

I also told them if it takes longer than 30 minutes to do paperwork I'll walk. I'm not a jerk to these people, I'm just very CLEAR about how much fu##ery I won't put up with. When I bought my very first new car, after college, my dad went with me. After it was all done and ingot the keys to my first ever new car, my dad asked me if I was excited. Nope, no I'm not, I'm tired from all the bs time wasted with the dealer. It sucked the fun out of it.

My Xterra, 2006, that I'm replacing w the Tacoma was a fun buy. Lots of haggling. But I was out in 30 minutes.

This truck, I just didn't have the Energy to beat on the salesman. He was nice, these trucks are being offered dirt cheap on a lease, so there isn't a ton of negotiable room where I am. So I ordered mine, got what I wanted. Now I'm just patiently waiting for it to be built in two weeks.

Bottom line, I bought a Toyota so I wouldn't need extra warranties. I'll mod it beyond what they will like as soon as I get it anyways!

Does yer rig have the capability to connect to satellite? Like Sirius radio, GPS mapping or Apple-whatever? If so, I'm betting yer rig is ratting you out.
Even if you don't use any extraterrestrial devices, if yer still connected somehow, THEY KNOW. It's been twice now while pulling out of my shop, I've gotten an alert that my computer needed an 'update' .. Which of course I did, but I don't use any of the extra services.
It's the same way that, say you get into an accident.. Your insurance can pull the info from The Black Box and say 'Well Mr. Lobster .. It seems you were doing 15 mph over the speed limit, in bad weather, at the time of your accident ... Claim denied'..
Yes it IS that 'Big Brother' scary. It's one of the reasons I put off buying a new rig as long as I could.

    Exactly.
'Mr. Warranty' tried to give me the hard sell on the 'electronics' (Most expensive one on the list..)
And I told him 'THE REASON I'm buying a Toyota is because of the rock-solid rep of QUALITY... Are you trying to tell me that Toyota quality is not what it's supposed to be?'
    He moved on pretty quick.

Eh, 2018, I dont think it has wireless telemetry.

One of 3 likely possibilities exist: a)My dealer sold the data, b) My dealer updated the online service records and that data got sold, or c) The dealer visit is a coincidence and the avalanche was the result of some algorithm that targets vehicles that are over two years old.

They don't use satellite to rat on you its the cell network. For example GPS on its own has no way to communicate your location to someone else. It's only a receiver. Another network (cell) would be needed to relay the GPS information.

Your touch screen doesn't have options for XMSirius or 'Mapping' (GPS mapping)? Huh... I would have thought a 2018 would be new enough to have those options .. If not, I'm guessing you're right about the other theory's then. It could be the age-old 'The average driver drives XX,XXX miles a year' and it's been so long of time now ... Better start hitting them with the 'You Need This' spam ..
But I'd be more inclined with the Selling Your Info / Algorithm theory.
Just like how if you google 'New coffee pots' and then your email inbox gets flooded spam ads from Amazon..

whenever your vehicle is serviced anywhere, it gets reported to Carfax and other reporting agencies. That information is in all kinds of different databases, especially if you're getting work done at a dealer they're going to report that back to Toyota or at least into an automated system that will then send out mailers and reminders ect for warranty extensions and what not

I remember when I bought my Tacoma new at the dealer hahaa. I went to go do paper work with the finance guy and I already new he was going to upsell me on some BS. I just wanted to sign the papers and drive off in my new truck. The guy started the whole salesman spiel on warranty, paint protection etc. I told him I wasn't interested in ANY add ons. Then he's like, "but we have alot of buyers who decline this stuff and later come back because they want it ." Yada Yada more BS. Then he continued and tryed to sell me on extras and I sat in the chair with a blank stare after all of it and said, "no thanks:lalala:." Super annoying but I guess its part of the buying process hahaa. Just say so, 9x out of 10 their sales pitches are BS.

I'm sure you're right .. I don't have a phone (Never will) so I'm just probably mixing the two technologies into one bowl of oatmeal.
Although I would never discount the possible ways they have to track you, that we may not know about.
Like any sport, it true that you never underestimate the last place team .. LOL!
