Just FYI it cost us around $1800 to drive up from Texas. It took 3 days to arrive in Oregon with install afternoon on the 4th day. We initially wanted to camp on the route back but the weather disagreed with us. We don't mind the cold because we have a Little Buddy Heater, but without any insulation in the camper and it being in the teens on our drive home hotels were the way to go. The hotels weren't the high dollar ones either and I tried to get every discount I could, from military to senior discount. We figured we'd make it a vacation since it seems all we both do is work. Sounds like a good deal from Eric if someone can't make the trip.

Maybe typically asked questions and associated answers on their website would solve some of the repetitive problems? (not sure if this has been done or not.. just a suggestion)

Seems this strategy is typical for many companies doing lots of business via electronic means.

FWIW when I talked to Spencer back in September I asked about the possibility for shipping in the event I couldn't get away from work to drive up. He said the cost would be around $1,800. And not only that, it would be a hassle for the customer because the carrier would not be able to deliver to a residence it would have to go to a commercial location or a freight facility and customer would still need to arrange for installation. That might be where Eric could also help.

Fast1 reminded me about some questions I have. Maybe we can create our own FAQ here as I'm sure many of us have the same questions which others may have already asked. We may be able to answer them here rather than pestering SP over and over. A few of mine:

    - is it recommended to install bed stiffeners to help deal with the weight of the X-1?
    - dust sealing - is there anything we should do such as remove bed rail caps and apply sealant or something else underneath?

I'm sure I had a few others I can't recall at the moment.

Yes, bed stiffeners are inexpensive insurance against the bedsides splaying out.

The 3rd gen is not supposed to be as bad with leaking and dust with the bed rail caps as the 2nd gens, but I would still remove them and seal things up before you get the X-1 on.

Nope, the 1st gen is a full metal bed. I never noticed any issues in the 15 months I had the Drifter on it.

I don't need a longbed. 10' lumber and 12' sheet metal fits fine!

In my experience (3 years, 3 different camper shells, all heavier than the X-1, thousands of off-road miles), the stiffeners are not absolutely necessary. Yeah, as @JasonLee stated they are cheap insurance. I haven’t seen any wonky bedside action, with or without campers on, and I don’t plan on putting them on. Bed stiffeners get in the way with how I like my bed set up.

As for dust sealing on the 3rd Gen, the front two corners are mitigated with butyl tape. Butyl tape is great to keep in the truck for a lot of stuff. I haven’t noticed the bed caps letting in any obvious dust, and I didn’t alter mine at all. And I traded mine out to the guy I sold my Flippac to, since I had to alter them for the mounting points (had to drill through the rails and cut away the bed caps). If you had the time, using similar methods as some 2nd Gen owners have to seal them up is probably good insurance too. I have noticed two areas at the tail gate that required caulk, as I saw light through them and dust intrusion on some trips through NV moon dust areas. Lastly, copious amounts of the tailgate bulb seal, replaced over time as they get chewed up, and you can get the 3rd Gen bed locked up pretty good.

I blame you @frenchee considering @Coop68 put his deposit down after we did. Your 1st gen is likely holding us up.

I'll be hounding him for a local meetup once he brings it back to Colorado... Then I can bombard the internet with 2nd gen short bed X-1 photos.
