Hey guys! so if I put 35s 20 in rims on my tacoma and now the steering wheel shakes going over 40 MPH, what could be causing this issue? and what should I do to correct it?

Get your tires rebalanced. Some tires are just a pita to balance or just won't.

This, start with the easy stuff. An unbalanced tire will cause the steering wheel to shake.

DO it right and get them done with a road force balancer. The only way to do it. Call around and see who has one..

35s and larger are ridiculously difficult to balance. You may want to consider dyna beads if they can't get them smooth.

    My experience:

These Tacomas do not like aftermarket wheels much.

    1) You will not be able to center the wheels on aftermarket 60 deg. conical lug nuts alone. If you are relying on the 60 deg. conical nuts alone to center, you will likely never get rid of the shake completely. I have spent an hour trying to center the wheels on the truck in the air, tightening each lug slowly while hand rotating the wheel on the hub and fully torquing them in the air and I still couldn't center them good enough to get rid of the shake. Much better, but couldn't get rid of it.

    2) You absolutely must run center bore hub adapters, i.e. 106.4mm to 110mm or 106.4 to 108mm adapters to match the wheel or whatever you need. These aren't optional because see 1 above.

    3) If your wheel spacers aren't good hub centric spacers with hubs to center your wheels on (i.e. Bora, Spidertrax), you'll never get rid of the shake. If you have the flat spacers without the proper bore and a centering hub on the wheel side, take them off.

    4) Last ditch effort; let the wheel shop put weights on the outside of the rim. I know it's ugly. I had a shake issue the shop couldn't get rid of. Tire companies try and compensate by putting weight in the barrel of the wheel so it can't be seen, but it isn't the same as getting it on the face when that's where the imbalance is. Once they put some black weights on the wheel at the lip on my setup, they were SO smooth.

I fought shaking for so long and it took OCD level effort to get rid of it. Never had a truck so sensitive to wheels/tires as this tacoma. It is like glass now after like a year.

dal3_gabble I really appreciate the detailed response ill definitely be attempting all of these to get rid of the shake as much as I can, do you recommend just going back to some original wheels with big tires?

Rebalancing didn't work for me by itself.

You can go aftermarket, you just have to put the work in to iron the kinks out.

Although not as high as yours, I had the same issue after installing new wheels/tires and lift. I kept taking it back to the tire store for a rebalance but they couldn't fix it. They swapped tires out still didn't fix it, they said it was an alignment issue. Realigned several times but still didn't fix the shake. After searching here on TW several people have had the same issue. I finally bought JBA's extended UCA's and had the alignment shop move my caster to 3.2/3.5 and the steering wheel shake is gone. I don't know if this is your issue but my steering wheel shake is gone with the increased caster. It's a process of elimination so do the simple/free things first, before moving to the more expensive options.
