I've found that I don't really need a pickup. I've got a cement access cab Off Road long bed with 20k. Title in hand. dealer is offering $29k for trade. Thinking of going 4runner route. Having time on my hands, I can do a private sale. Appreciate your input before I list it.

    Thanks

Check KBB and go slightly higher than that given the current demand.

I’m in a similar boat. I have a van for hauling, and I only get to drive it to get groceries these days. Title in hand. Thinking of selling it to boost my house down payment, but the wife likes it so guess I’m keeping it.

It may be worth a bit more at private sale, but enough to offset the sales tax savings by trading for a 4Runner? Depends on taxes where you live, but that's the delta you've got to figure out.

I got $30k trade-in earlier this year for a 2016 TRD sport with 55k on it if that helps.

I sold my 2018 Taco, this year. Private party for $35k. 4x4 dclb OR. If your truck is 2wd I'd say that's a decent trade in. I will also say I've had better luck selling private party or to Carvana/Carmax.

    Depending on location:

That's just a hair low in my area but sounds about right for a typical dealership offer. If you have the time your can certainly do a little better.

Another vote for Carvana. I got a good price, quick pick up and no tire kickers wasting my time.

Yeah, it seems like a no brainier; get better than low offers usually at the dealers and you don't have to deal with dumbasses. Win/Win

Still though, if the OP is looking to trade, a wholesale buy bid from the dealer may be a better deal than private party or carvana etc. because of the sales tax offset. Plus, if you know how to play the game you may be able to work a better deal overall because the dealer can win two ways - with your trade (if they choose to market it themselves rather than wholesale) and with the new car transaction.

Go get carvana/carmax bids. If they're higher, take them to the dealer to support your request for a better deal.

Take your offer from dealer. Add the sales tax. Add another $3k. Thats your asking price. Anything you get above dealer offer plus tax is gravy.

Carvana offered me ~$30K for my '19 DCSB with 13k miles... I was offended :). I feel that I could get at least $34K private party.

I agree with what's being said about trading in for the tax savings if you're getting another vehicle. That with the hassle you're going to avoid going private party is worth it.

One should check their state's tax requirements. Here MO we can sell privately and bring info to DOR and get the credit of sold value against new, I think we have 30, 60, or 90 days,,, can't remember.
