Hey man. I'm a pothead and I fantasize about the universe and shit, psychology and whatnot, not stealing tailgates!

Looks like a 7-pin tubular core? Have you tried the $25 impressioning tools ($50 on Amazon) against it?

    That was your daily.

LPL is pretty killer. It is like it is not worth buying a lock to start with.

You know the best defense against LPL is several layers of duct tape.

30 secs with a cordless impact and torx bit is all it takes to remove the ribbed liner. In fact, that's how they install the liner at the factory.
That's another way but carries risk of damaging the sheetmetal around the handle.

You don't need to make your tailgate 100% theft proof, besides you can't.

The goal is to make your tailgate a harder target than the pickup parked next to you.

Thieves are grab-n-go. They don't want to hang around trying to defeat some measure. They want speed and quick cash to support their habit.

There are many battery powered tools that would quickly cut the band on any screw clamp. Same can be said for locks. Thieves can slice thru exhausts in just a few seconds to snatch a CAT. Tailgate is more simple to snatch.

Just remember that any lock or security measures is just a time. So in the army a pad lock is 15 minutes and a dead bolt is 20 minutes for example, so patrols are set up to swing by all of these locks at a given time interval.

locking you tail gate adds time to how long it takes to steal, maybe enough that they go to the next truck may be not.

Not just Tacoma tailgates; catalytic converters and any copper wiring. Most of it is meth driven crime in areas with a lot of meth use. I have seen individuals in the city I lived in smoking meth in broad daylight with no fear of being arrested.

There are groups of individuals in California who work at night stealing whatever metal they can sell at metal recycle centers. Many businesses and schools find the copper wire stripped out of their rooftop central AC units during the night.

I had to park my Tacoma in my garage at night when I lived in California to prevent the tailgate and catalytic converter from being stolen. I had outside cameras, an alarm system and a large German Shepherd to prevents thefts at my property. The best thing I ever did was to move out of California.

The sad part is California use to be a very nice area to live and raise a family. I don’t plan on going back.

Only aesthetic mods so far Leer 180 cap & Clazzio covers on order.
I'd never use this in our New England conditions. Between the corrosive deicing chemicals and the climate, that tubular lock would corrode to being permanently locked.

Upon closer review, the Sabellco uses a Chicago Ace II core which isn't vulnerable to the simple impressioning tools. To get this off non-destructively would require single-pin picking which takes time and skill.
It'll be just another lock you lubricate every year on the truck, along with the tailgate handle lock, fuel cap lock, tonneau lock, door lock, Maxtrax lock, etc. The only difference is it lacks a weather shutter. You can mitigate this by taping over the lock with Gorilla tape. Toyota uses tape to close off some holes in the frame.

I have the Sabellco and keep a piece of 3M packing tape over the face of it. Keeps all the debris out of the lock cylinder...

    yikes!! $83?

what I did was installed 2 plastic zip ties next to each other, then on top of that I put 2 metal zip ties, then I put a hose clamp, and I installed a popnlock.

Just looking to deter thieves and make it take longer, but if they really want something bad enough they’ll take the time.

Like the Sabellco because when I need to take the tailgate off for whatever reason I can have it off in a minute and back on in a minute, or however long it takes to unlock it and take it off or put it back on and lock it. No need to mess with any c-clamps.
