One problem -that truck is waaaay too clean!

 

Trying to set up another wood project... 5 large ash trees on the ground cut into 10ft sections.... we got about a foot of snow coming tomorrow into Thursday which will slow this process down. Hoping to have a look at this project Sunday and come up with a game plan on hauling such a large amount of wood

I feel left out running the husqvarna 550xpmk2

 

I ran one of those yesterday (at a friend's house). Nearly comparable to my 261. The only slight difference was the power curve. Stihl seems to generate the power immediately and there was a very slight delay in the Husky coming up to full power. I actually liked the balance/feel of the Husky in hand versus the 261. Like I said previously, both are top notch in their respective categories.

Safe to say that I overloaded the shit out of the Can Am.

 

Sweet! We cut one up last weekend ... rare for us to see red oak... have fun and be safe!

 

I offered some of it to my neighbor, but he turned it down. He said, "oak doesn't burn that hot".

 

That sucks probably a third of my firewood is oak...

 

Sucks for him, good for me. Oak is one of the hottest burning woods, my neighbor is slightly "off".

He might have tried burning unseasoned oak, hence the dumb statement.

 

Oak is my favorite wood to burn. Splits well and heats the house.

 

He probably heats with lava!

 

OUch-- your "neighbor" either has a unlimited supply of whatever kind of wood he/she wants, or they are badly misinformed.
Here is a chart on BTU's per ton of wood. Red oak is not as high as white oak, but still high up on the chart. Someone that turns down wood that is that nice -is just plain WRONG, or does not want to do the work to break it down.

He's one of those guys who has "weird ideas" about things.

He also doesn't like to burn ash. He says it makes too much ash. He literally thinks they named it "ash" because of the ash that it produces (even though it doesn't produce any more ash than any other wood).

 

Especially RED OAK -- let it set and get frozen inside and it will practically pop itself apart when dropping some sort of a splitting tool into it. This is one aspect of red oak that is better than white. White can be a bit stringy. That tree that the poster showed on his little truck would be ideal splitting. All other things being equal, one on one, That stuff could be split about as fast manually as with a power splitter.

 

When we had our wood burner I would use what ever I could find on the property or adjacent properties, but wild cherry was my favorite. The smell coming out of the chimney was tremendous.

 

My choice of woods would/does vary with how much I need wood at any given time and how much effort and danger is involved with getting the wood down on the ground. If I am offered a tree that could in any way fall the WRONG way and hit something it should not --then I will turn it down no matter what variety it is -sadly. I would tell the tree owner however if the tree service they need to hire wants to leave the wood --and it can save them some money -then it is a "win-win". Most of the local services around here are good with deals like that. I have even had tree services deliver monsterous trunk piecs to my drive way for free. The key in my neighborhood is to listen for the sounds (LOUD) of their chipper, and go talk to them.

 

The last few days or so I have been dropping a single piece of Eastern red cedar in my stoves --makes the neighborhood smell "Christmasy" Only do this with very very dry cedar -unless you like extra creosote-NOT
