I am looking to buy a trailered boat. Realistically what is the max weight and length that can be towed safely without a trailer package. My vehicle is 2WD and came with the factory hitch. I know what the speca sre but sometime they are over realistic.

    Thanks

Length is of very minimal concern. Granted you start pulling a 40’ anything life in the Tacoma will not be enjoyable :)

I can’t say I recommend ever towing over 5k often but I do all the time. I’m the type that loads stuff on my trailer and go down road. There’s been times I’ve had to stop and unload because the truck was telling me without a doubt it was too much!

Most important part of towing is properly loading the trailer in tow and if exceeding 2-3k lbs then definitely suggest trailer brakes.

Here’s a pic of a time where the truck had no issue hauling but the trailer definitely didn’t like it. This was with my 2015 Tacoma with factory tow package. Every bit of this was treated lumber, around $5500 worth for my pool deck. By the way, that’s extremely cheap compared to today’s cost :)

Anyway, Almost burnt up one of the hubs on my trailer towing this load so had to pull off side of road and have someone come meet me with their truck and trailer to help haul it. The truck itself didn’t cry hauling it but I could definitely tell that it was beyond its towing safe capabilities.

Anyway, realistically and safety considered, I’d never haul more than 6500 down the highway.

Tow ratings in the US are pretty conservative. Mind the weight on the door sticker and do what the manual says, you'll be fine.
