Hi. I bought my nephew an 02 Tacoma a few months back. We do the work to it ourself as needed. Tonight he went to start the truck and said it tried to crank but died and started smoking from the steering column. I don’t see anything obvious or smell anything like an electrical burn out. But when u turn the key nothing comes on and when the key is in the on position it’s not latching in. U can pull the key out in the on position. Any suggestions?

Take the trim panels off and get down there so you can see the electrical portion of the ign switch. Look for melted wires and stinky burned stuff

    And welcome to TW

Thanx for all the support. It turned out to be the electrical part of the ignition switch. Had Power in and none coming out. Fairly inexpensive fix but definitely a test for your troubleshooting skills.
