Yesterday I installed my new TRD pro aftermarket grill on the 21 Tacoma. Worked fine for a couple of hundred miles and then the clean sensor code appeared. Is it trial and error with the washers/shim in front of the top screw or is there some kind of known formula. Thanks E8869B6F-126D-4223-8D29-F1864EF0FA8E.jpg

Hey Fishfan, Did you ever find anything out about this? I have a 2019 and put my TRD prot grille on from the Yota Garage. Everythign worked well for about 6 months and 9000 miles, yes, 9k. and all of the sudden one day it was raining like heck, and the clean sensor error came on. The thing is, i can restart and it goes away for a certain amount of time. 10-20 miles and it comes back on. when it is working the cruise works everything just fine. I will say, i never used any washers as you mention.

    Thanks,

    BK

Mine came on after 100 miles with 1 washer. Went to 3 and it came back on again after about the same miles. Now went to 5 and it seems to be worse. I’m guessing it’s trial and error so I’m going to 4. I’ll keep you posted. Some said that the dealer might have an alignment tool, some said it would auto align, no definitive answer.

Ok, thanks. So, here is a pic of my sensor. Question, where do you put the washers? i see 4 screws, 2 outside bolts and looking at the pic, there is a hole at bottom left. looks like a screw could go there, but when i installed the grille, no screw was in there. Thanks.

Changed the grill on my 19 and have not had a problem; rain or snow. Make sure moisture or dirt don’t accumulate between the garnish and transducer. The garnish should be invisible to the transducer, however, adding washers may cause some reflection with the metal in the area or accumulation between the two parts. I would just make sure the garnish and transducer are tight and the wiring harness is secure. There is a longer harness available for the pro grill that comes with the proper cable ties.

The main source of errors I have seen have been from snow/ice caking the front of the garnish or heavy rain/splash getting between the sensor and the garnish.

I have not heard many saying they had issues with using all OEM parts: Grille. harness, garnish. Maybe the aftermarket ones are not the exact same mounting angle for the sensor?

So im having this issue now on my 2021. I dont know if i got an older style pro grill, but it doesn't have the garnish, its solid plstic with 2 of the holes having nothing covering where you see the sensor.
I thought the same thing that the dealer could just calibrate it according to where they sit. Apparantly not, they charged me $175 just to look, which took 2 hours according to them but only charged me for 1. But i managed to google this whole thing in 10 minutes and call them back at the end of it. (it was my 15k check up so i asked them to see about it, guess that meant spend 2 hours diagnosing it.) They in the end said you need a new sensor and harness, quoted me $850 so i said ill manage without for now.

My personal experience, as soon as I used cruise control the "Clean Sensor" error never came back. I also have one washer added.

I had this issue when I bought a second hand radar cover. I purchased a oem from a ebayer that had them for a great price ,back in 2019. Once I replaced with an oem cover the issues went away.

I added one and it was okay until I hit highway. Same with 2 washers. I think the wind is messing it up having nothing infront of it so I think I’m gonna custom put the garnish onto the aftermarket grill.

This is what I’m hoping. Did you have to custom put the garnish on yours? I ordered a pro grill off Facebook so idk if it’s aftermarket, older model or what but it doesn’t have the same slot for the new garnish so I’m gonna make it fit

To be honest I don’t remember. I think I had to trim some of the parts to make sure everything fit perfect. I made sure the cover was as tight to the grille/ radar as possible.
