So, I’ll be getting the 2021 Sport with JBL system soon and was wondering about upgrading the door speakers and tweeters. I’ve found conflicting info on here saying they’re simply swappable, but other info saying they need to be specific ohms, tweeters need to be cutout, etc.

    A couple questions:

    1. Would it even be worth it to upgrade the door speakers and tweeters (with no other modifications) or would the headunit/stock amp pretty much cap out and sound like stock?

    2. What speakers to use for the doors and tweeters (links/model numbers would be great)?

    3. Anything else needed to achieve this (assuming it is possible).

Swapped out my tweeters in my 19 OR with some Subaru tweeters that are the "Kicker" brand. So worth it! Subaru OEM plug and play .sounds weird i know, i thought the same. Didnt even touch my door speakers after switching tweeters in dash.

Do you have the stock JBL system?

Pretty sure these don’t work with jbl in fact people have said the JBL’s are better. A lot of the JBL threads about upgrading get flooded with non JBL people and it makes it pretty confusing.

Front speakers should be component speakers and not coaxial speakers. Separate tweeters in the dash from the 6x9 mid woofers in the doors. The separation is wonderful on the ears. I put these in my truck: Focal IS TOY 690. They are plug and play for the Toyota and have built in crossover with a high sensitivity rating. They also have a baffle around the magnets and foam around the outer edges of the 6x9 mid woofers.

    https://www.focal.com/en/car-audio/...integration/plugplay/focal-toyotar/is-toy-690

My head unit is not JBL and I think puts out about 18 watts per channel. The speakers are 75 watts RMS. Amazingly the head unit powers the speakers just fine and I haven't installed an amp. Probably will one day.

The JBL speakers are the same crappy speakers in the non JBL systems. The JBL system simply gives more speakers and more watts.

Yeah. I didn’t think those would work. Thanks for confirming. Any references for what would work in a JBL system?

Do you know if those would work in the JBL system? Apparently they need some type of special set up to work with the factory amp.

I can't answer that definitively. But I can't imagine the current speakers needing anything special that regular speakers don't need.

Here's what I have been referencing as I literally read though all these threads today

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/upgrade-3rd-gen-jbl-speakers.517420/page-2#post-18190748

Post #31 has all the JBL specs. I took his advice and actually ordered a rockford fostgate 8" today that will drop straight into the factory sub box and work with factory amp (though I'll need to drill with self tapping screws into the cheap plastic which I could care less about). Supposedly it sounds pretty punchy based on his further comments and other reviews I have looked at. I am not going for a ghetto high school shake the car sound so hoping it will suffice, I'll report back. I think the main thing lacking for me was the sub, but you can reference that for what will work, there are more recommendations in that thread.

Subaru tweeters are 4 ohm, JBL amp and speakers are 2 ohm. They would work, but wouldn't sound great/you'd lose volume. There are better upgrades to make before going that route, otherwise just gut all stock JBL speakers and amp and build from the ground up if you want the absolute best (personally I don't think they are bad). Apparently OEM audio plus has a full replacement in the works but they've said that since 2018.

Well, those look to be 4 ohm. From what I’ve read the JBL system needs to stick with 2 or 3 ohm to match the amp. Don’t know for sure though. I’m hoping to find all that out here. :)

Thanks a ton for the link! I’m the same way; I don’t need to rattle any windows. Just want a little more punch and clarity.
    Thanks again!

I'm getting out of my depth with the JBL system. I'll leave you with this and hope it helps.

Yes! Please let me know. I’m gonna poke around and see if I can’t find more info on the door/tweeter replacements.

The screenshot is the same thread as the link I posted above, I recommend reading that thread more as a starter, there are a few other good ones too I'll see if I can dig up.

I'm watching this thread to learn about the JBL upgrade. I mistakenly bought a set of the Subaru kicker tweeters, thinking I would pop them in for an easy upgrade. I did some more research and discovered these are not the solution to JBL. I'll have to sell these Kickers now.

I mounted that 8” rockford 2 ohm which dropped in pretty easily, though I did snip the factory wiring to get it in cause at this point I am pretty committed to changing things out. Overall it was definitely a noticeable improvement over the stock JBL woofer (which feels as light as a piece of paper compared to this hefty sub). But, I think there’s still more to be desired. The real problem is that it’s not a component system- I think at the end of the day I’m looking for something that has separate lows mids and highs for a clearer sound. So I’ll probably leave this in till it nears the Amazon return period then make the jump to a full system swap. Here’s a pic (I added sound deadner too)

Would you say it’s worth the money for the added “thump”?
