I think the agreement is that it has a different harness, but also most of them are jbl system units unless you find one out of a manual transmission.

By looking at the connections, I would say doubtful unless there are conversion wiring harnesses.

It back of the radios are different.

I had CarPlay in my BMW M240i and that was one of the things I refused to give up. I use Waze and listen to podcasts daily, both of which are integrated into the CarPlay software. It was one reason (among others) I waited for the 2020s.

Yes. I just replaced my 2019 stereo with a Kenwood capable of wireless CarPlay. It was worth all of the money I spent on it and then some. Entune in my opinion was just trash for what I needed in my life.

Darn. I wanted to upgrade to the 2020 head unit. I guess I’ll keep looking at the Alpine unit

Hello! First post on TW. Just got my first Tacoma and very underwhelmed with my sound system. I went to get a small upgrade and was told that the stock JBL speakers are 2 OHMs. So now I am on a journey to understand all the audio stuff by myself and upgrade it all.

I constantly have a full truck with friends and really want a sound system to keep up with everyone singing on top of their lungs.

I am not a super handy-man, but I thankfully have my dad's assistance. I am motivated to do this because I went in to a local shop where they explain that they could get a DECENT sound system installed for $6,000... Could not believe it myself. So here I am.

I more-so want to understand how all the OHMs, sizing, and speaker types all mean to make the best choice for the sound system I want.

From what I understand, just off the bat, is that the stock JBL head-unit does not have enough power to power 4 4OHMs speakers, 2 tweeters, and 2 subs (I want to install 2 in the rear behind the driver and passenger side seats).

So to be able to power a stronger system, my first step is to buy an amplifier, correct? Is there a website where you could build a sound system and see if all the components work together (like pcpartpicker)?

Also, what is the big difference from component speakers to coaxial?

Looking forward to seeing some responses and hopefully getting a sweet set-up for my truck. I will for sure post pictures of everything.

Go to crutchfield.com and start doing some reading. They're the retailer that you want and they have a lot of really informative explanations on how things work and how to install them.

Decent for $6k?? 6k should be able to get you top of the line.

check out my thread, in total I have around 4k invested in the system, android, 3 amps, digital sound processor (I can control time alignment and crossover points for each of the 9 speakers) 3 way component systems.
If you plan to get a new headunit, then the sky is the limit on what you can do. If you want to keep the stock JBL headunit, then your going to be more limited to what you can do.

I was bummed when I found this out. Would have gone with non-JBL if I would have known.

Thank you so much! I will be reading all of this when I get chance because I really want to do it all myself and get a banging sound system in.

EXACTLY! For $6K I'd expect a disco ball and a dancefloor! Not decent.

I just like the stock look of the original headunit. But if I can find something that looks sleek and stock, but with more power or whatever is needed for upping the audio, I wouldn't mind replacing it.

So one thing that you can do with the OEM JBL system is to upgrade the speakers. You just need to go about it the right way. You need 2ohm-3ohm speakers, and the front tweeters need to be replaced with 3.5 inch fullrange (woofer/tweeter combo)
JBL happens to make 3 ohm speakers in their aftermarket line up that will work out just fine.

If you buy a component system, you wont really be able to use the crossovers the new speakers come with as the JBL system has its own active crossover and if you put a new tweeter in the dash spot you will blow it as the stock dash speakers get midrange and treble frequencies... these will blow out a tweeter real fast.

So, if I were you and didnt want to replace the factory headunit, but still wanted pretty good sound and everything to work right I would go with these parts.

JBL Club 322F (3.5 inch coaxial for the dash)
JBL CLub 6932 (6x9 3way speaker for the doors, the tweeters on these will do nothing as the factory crossover will cut all frequencies they would normally get)
JBL Club 622 (6.5 inch rear door speakers)
Pioneer TS-A2000LD2 (dual 2 ohm 8 inch subwoofer)

These speaker will all fit in OEM locations, play well with the OEM amp, and sound better than the stock ones do. The dash speakers will require some trimming under the grills, but will still fit.

Also these speakers will all come in around $500

does anyone know how to tell for sure if a jbl unit has carplay in it by looking at it (without installing in the car). is there a specific part number or port on the back that differentiates a carplay jbl stereo from non carplay one? thank you

I love my stock head unit - car play works good. Upgraded all my speakers to Folcal/ kicker 10” sub and arc audio amp.

Stock speakers suck on Tacoma .
My sisters stock system in her CRV sounds 10’s better than my stock system on Tacoma.

Got any links to the speakers you installed by chance? Also, did you have a JBL system to begin with?
