2016 Tacoma Transmission went out for the 2nd time!!

My brothers Tacoma’s transmission has went out for the 2nd time. First at 44k and now at 49k. It is getting replaced under warranty but is the dealership missing something? He does not drive it hard but does take it off road once every 2 months. He does have a 4 inch lift with 285/65/17 tires.

 

Every 11,250,000 Toyota’s produced one lemon occurs. He may of gotten “that” one.

 

Fluid level maybe, but for only after 5k, gotta say a lemon. Get a different tech to install if it were me

 

First one at 44k is on Toyota IMO, the second one failing screams "dealer fuck up" though.

As much as people like to cry about the AT here at TW, the failure rate is almost 0.

 

how long has the lift and tires been on ?

 

He has had it for over a year. The first replacement transmission was 6 months ago. The new one is getting installed tomorrow.

 

Almost certainly a mistake during the first replacement.

What do you mean by the transmission "went out"?
What were the symptoms for each failure?

 

Did they give him a hard time about wanting to deny warranty due to the lift? Just curious how much would the charge be without warranty?

 

did it "go out" the same both times?

 

Is neutral dropping and launching in 4 wheel drive a regular activity? Or is a driver thinking they're in sport mode (manual mode) and shifting into neutral at high rpm?

Note: I'm assuming this is an automatic transmission.

 

It wouldn’t shift out of 1st gear and would stall out at red lights. Putting the transmission in reverse, it would hesitate first and then go in. It is an automatic

 

The 1st time they did try and say it was the bigger wheels, but he was constantly on them saying it wasn’t the issue. The 2nd time, they didn’t say anything.

Judging by the way the first transmission was performing , I am guessing it was an easy fix by removing the valve body . The trouble is , dealers dont normally do valve body work and therefore just replace the transmission with an overhauled transmission .
As for the second failure , I will almost guarantee it was a problem due to installation

 

is there a service learn procedure on new Toyota transmissions? maybe they didn't perform that and the shift points were all wonky from the bigger tires... transmission constantly flares between gears for 5k miles then poop done..
what could the tech done/missed that would cause the transmission to fail 5k miles later? especially if all he did was install a reman..

 

Regardless, these 3rd generation auto transmissions stink! If you have NEVER had a problem god bless but when you do it ain't fun!!
