Chirping Sound at Idle

07 4wd 4cyl. 92k mi. has developed a slight chirping sound at idle. Can’t hear it from in the cab. What do you think the most likely cause would be? Thanks for any ideas.

Belt is original.

 

Check your tension and idler pullies they can make that sound when worn. A good practice is replace them when you do a new belt.

 

Probably belt chirp, spray a little water on it and see if it changes. If it's the belt chirping you need to make sure nothing is leaking onto it and all your pulleys are good and aligned.

 

He didnt list if he had an automatic or manual transmission . It could be the dreaded throw-out bearing

 

That’s a thing on the 4 banger too?

 

Not as common with the 5 speed transmission , but it does happen .

 

Agreed with belt
Take some dielectric grease and put a small amount on the inside of belt. I know sounds silly but I promise best thing for belts that are a little squeaky / worn

 

Appreciate the replies everyone. It is 5 speed manual. Jeekers, if it’s the throw out bearing then I’ll try and put it off for a while. Really not looking forward to a clutch job. Will post back when I find my stethoscope and poke around a bit. A little tired of car work lately but ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
