Just bought a new 2021 Tacoma Off-road (woohoo), short bed double cab and trying to figure out how much weight is to much for a stock shock setup. I have a topper (165 lbs) and planning to add a Decked Drawer system (220 lbs), cab rack (40lbs) and possibly a roof tent (140lbs) for a total of 565 lbs. Im not planning to do any serious off roading but Im wondering if the stock shocks are enough to handle this weight load?

Full loaded with 3 people lets say another 700lbs Im guessing.

If anyone knows of an option to the Decked Draw system that is lighter please let me know. I wont be carrying a lot of weight on top of the drawer system.

Thanks for everyones comments. This helps a ton

Yes, they can handle the load,,, but your weight estimate is empty, it'll be easy to throw a couple hundred pounds in there, if not more. You will have squat with all that stuff loaded.

Edit: sorry, I glossed over the past with 3 people a win additional 700 lbs. Yeah, you're on the head heavy side, your springs will help with cargo weight, not your shocks per say. As mentioned below check tag and you cannot actually raise GVWR.

Or you may just cross the bridge when you get there. Upgrade what you think you need to after having those goodies on your truck.

Lots of people go with bed stiffeners when going with a topper. However you may have issues fitting the decked system with those in.

Look on the drivers door jamb. There is a sticker with Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Payload listed. GVWR is the maximum allowable weight of the truck and anything in, or on it. The Payload is the actual weight of the truck subtracted from GVWR when the truck rolled off the assembly line. Payload varies depending on the truck, but I've seen some as low as 900 lbs. The GVWR is the same, but heavier trucks have less payload, lighter trucks more. Most 4X4 Double Cabs will be around 1100-1200 payload. That includes everything you put in the truck including passengers and the tongue weight of a trailer.

I weigh 220, my wife 140. We combine for 360 so that comes off too. You'll also end up with other gear including camping gear so you could be pushing things to near the limit particularly if you have a truck closer to 1000 lbs payload. If yours is closer to 1200 then you have more room to work with. But once you start loading the truck down you may not have enough payload left over to tow even a light trailer. A 3000 lb utility trailer will eat up about 400 lbs of payload.

It will be best to actually weigh your truck with any tools, recovery gear or anything else that stays in there all the time. Subtract the trucks actual weight and the weight of the driver and any potential passengers from GVWR and you'll have a true picture of how much additional weight you can handle.

Modifying the suspension doesn't increase the amount of weight you can carry. But you may find the truck rides and handles better with different shocks.

Ride Rite Air Springs (air bags) are a great way to level the ride and prevent bottoming the suspension.
I also went one level up with all four shocks to Bilstein 5100s. This was after a couple years stock.

You, your buddy and four bags of concrete put it over the legal gvw.
Seriously its between 990 and 1150 lb.
The load you are talking about will overload most half tons!
And I know what you are going to say.... "well, I see other trucks kitted out like this" and my reply, quoting my mom, is "well if your friends jumped off a building would you too?"

Seriously, just poking fun but those are the numbers for max payload and for half tons like my Tundra as well.

And... no matter what you mod or do you cannot legally change the payload capacity of your truck!

    Good luck and mod away.
My advice is to start adding weight one piece at a time and drive it a week or two before adding something else.
You will then know when you need to add heavier springs or shocks or in your case, bumpstops.
If you fully do everything you say above and load our for a week of camping off grid, you will be close to 2K loaded which is 2x rated load.

I agree with this one. The only difference I did on my 17 Sport m/t was upgraded the leafs to old man emu medium upgrade and put in 6112 coil over springs up front and 5100 in the back. Great solid ride that handled the weight. Air bags also kept your ride level and prevent your headlights aiming up into on coming traffic. When I wasn’t carrying the weight you can expect an easy 1.5-2” lift in the back at around 60lbs air. Air bags will run you about $400 CAD and it’s an easy 1.5 hour install you can do yourself.

The only true way to carry all those mods legally and still stay with a Tacoma is a utility trailer. They make them with Rtt and drawers and enclosed and and and. Good luck!
