Eh, kind of a moot argument. People knew about the FJ but it was impractical just like the 2-door Jeep, very few people are interested whether they saw a commercial or not. The LC200 is expensive and sales are extremely limited, in comparison when was the last time you saw a Mercedes G-Wagon commercial?

At the end of the day, no one wants any of them.

Well TV is a tool to market a vehicle of any price. The idea is to get their interest and pull them into a dealership out of curiosity and to sell. the FJ is a niche vehicle but the LC isn't. It's expensive but not as much as a G wagon.

At that price point, the LC200 is absolutely a niche vehicle. Toyota’s bread and butter is the “every mans” vehicle.

We can buy an LC200 but why? We went with a much better optioned and more fuel efficient Lexus. The competition really opens up.

My last Toyota truck lasted 30 years. I drove it for 19 and put 590,000. miles on it. Ran the Rubicon over a dozen times. That 85 4x4 22r 5speed never let me down.

So, maybe not forever, but 20 years would be nice.

that is no longer true, I personally have owned 8 new Toyota Pickups, starting in 1987, a 4x4 turbo, this current truck has been in the shop more than all my other trucks combined, as a madder of fact, it been in the shop more than all my new vehicles combined including a Mercury Capri and a Jeep JKUR.
I think Toyota will fix my truck, but the dealer has done all they can.

I thought it died due to CAFE standards. FJ got horrible MPGs. I remember hearing it in a you tube video with Mike Sweers.

Oh Maybe, I know sales were awful. I think they only sold like 10k a year the final couple years.

    So. Many. Stickers.
Combo of both. Public scared of gas prices driving sales down, cafe standards meaning Toyota would either need to produce a 70+mpg car to counter it, or can it.

    Unfortunate really.

I wish we had the option of better off road tires from the factory. A little more room for articulation would be nice, too, but mostly more aggressive tires.

A little history of Toyota engineering for you and why they are the way they are. Back when Japan first got into the auto industry they took tips from US manufacturers, the detroit big boys. They took the know-how back to Japan and mastered what is called the Kaizen method, so much so that now US auto makers go there to learn from them!

The Kaizen method preaches very small, incremental changes over time. The goal being gradual improvement over radical innovation and big changes. This is why their trucks look dated, they didn't make too many major nuts and bolts changes between 2nd and 3rd gen other than body work. I wouldn't be surprised if it was the same between 1st & 2nd gen too. Slow and steady wins the race, and that's why Toyota's #1.

Started driving my first in 88. 2wd, no air conditioning and even had to roll up the windows by hand. Anyhow my brother was just complaining about the new trims not having the leather seats he likes . I called him an ahole and told him to buy an Escalade.

Tacoma's will always be the number 1 mid size pick up. 99% of Tacoma owners would rather mod the trucks
ourselves than buy them tricked out. What's that saying

This thread didn't age well. Barely 2 months and inventory on hand is abysmal. Like guns and roses said patience

    Just my .02:

Toyota makes quality products. As mentioned above, incremental changes...don’t surprise the customer...

I cross-shopped with several other companies...reliability aside, comparable vehicles were more expensive, and of course NO MT (Frontier doesn’t count).

I am very happy with my purchase 2 years in. No problems, got water pump fixed quickly with no fuss, virtually no maintenance costs.

I personally don’t see the need for any offerings as stated by the OP. Such things appeal to a small segment of the buying public. And diesel...I am a bit of a diesel fanboy, but I think for most people the idea is better than the actual product. (You can get a diesel Colorado—I don’t think they sell too many of them though.) Yes more torque and much better gas mileage. No it won’t go fast. My take is that you can tune a diesel for power or for speed (like the BMW 535d) but not both. Plus, the environmental issues may be overblown (IMO), but they’re still an issue for a lot of people.

If I were hauling 7000 lbs on a regular basis I’d want a diesel (or a bigger truck, but that’s another thing). For daily driving at current gas prices a petrol engine is just fine. If Toyo thought they could make money selling a HiLux or Taco diesel, they’d offer one.

any dealership will put better tires on when you're buying the truck. If you ask. you'll have to pay for them, but a lot of dealerships will work with you on this.

Same. Miss that hunk of junk
