My poor little taco

got totaled today. I hit a patch of black ice on an overpass and crunched the front and damaged the rear. What a pain in the arse. I have tacoma front floor mats, a khaki seat cover and a tonneau cover for sale.

With that said, I would like another tacoma (or a 4runner) but no single cab. Do the v6s require more maintenance than the 2.4/2.7 engines? Such as timing belts, etc? What kind of maintenance is involved with the 4wd system, periodic 4x4 lubes, etc?

I will stay with toyota...whether it's a another taco or a 4runner is a toss up.

 

that sucks man sorry to hear that, for the 4wd there is not a whole lot of maintenance that needs to be done. lube the shaft every so often,the transfercase only takes 1 qt of oil and doesnt require periodic changing like the motor oil. also one thing ya want to do is put a few miles a month on the truck with it in 4wd to keep everything lubed up.

 

Don't get a DC...they're all auto and the bed is practically too small to even call a pickup truck.

yea my dad has a double cab, the room is nice but when you want somebody to ride back there you have to move all your junk. they are just big junk catchers. and like stlharry said the bed is too short for anything useful..

 

ARE YOU SERIOUS??? Let's start with some loads I have hauled
1. 1830lbs of landscape materials
2. two la-z-boy recliners
3. fullsize bed
4. china cabinet
5. 2'x5' desk
6. top of the line treadmill
7. when I was working, 30 cases 40lbs each frozen turkeys-1100lbs of various beef boxes, 3 8-tier dollies, one-half of a lunchmeat section in milkcrates...
need I go on? This bed on this truck has served me, Safeway, and family/friends VERY well. You are so wrong for saying it is "useless"

 

Useless is a strong word, I agree.

But when my friend picked me up in his DC to go snowboard, neither of our snowboards fit in his bed. I ride on a 164, he rides on a 161. So they were resting on the edge of his tailgate bungee corded down.

It was a little awkward, honestly.

 

Sure those boards are too long for this bed and too wide to slip through the rear glass but still doesn't render this bed useless.

 

The V6 does have timing belts that require changing every 90k. It's fairly cheap and easy. I usually replace the water pump, thermostat, upper/lower radiator hoses, and accessory belts when I do. I think all of that usually runs about $300 and takes me about 6-8 hours to do.

That one Saturday afternoon is definitely worth the power over a 4 cylinder.

4WD maintenance....not much unless you tear something up. Just make sure that you use the 4WD every month. I believe the manual advises driving 16 miles per month. There is a very straight flat road that I drive to work every day. I usually kick it in 4WD a couple of days down that stretch every month.

 

I found an 06 fulltime 4wd 4runner limited at a local dealership yesterday. After driving it, the other 4runners didnt stand a chance. I think I got a good deal on it...22.7k dollars with 63k miles. Oh, and it has the v8. I don't normally buy anything without researching but I REALLY like this truck...plus I didn't feel like riding the bus to work Monday!! Another reason...we're getting snow today...

 

I've owned the truck for 11 years and only use 4wd when needed. I better start knocking on wood.

Pretty sure 4runner's aren't AWD.

edit: nvm... they offered AWD in their sport package.

 

I'm sure it is...the selector on the dash has H4 and L4 options.

 

Fulltime 4WD means it is out of your hands and in control of a computer anf sensors that send power to any and all wheels as needed for maximum traction-in other words all wheel drive like said above.
