The clear coat on my roof is starting to fail, plan of action?

The clear coat on the front of my roof is starting to show early signs of failure. I'm thinking of repainting the whole roof but there is no body line to to separate the back end of the cab. I don't want to remove the bed to paint the back end of the cab either.

My plan of action is to:

1) Sand down the entire roof
2) Spraymax 2k primer
3) Dupli Color base coat.
4) Spraymax 2k clear
5) Spraymax blender to blend the clear some where on the back edge of the roof


I also need to repaint my fender flares and front bumper too since the clear is also failing. But my roof is the main priority since I don't rust to start setting in.

I'm also considering skipping the primer and base coat since the base coat still look ok. Is that a bad idea?

Update: I had a body shop repaint with new base/clear for $750. They took care of my front bumper too which also had clear coat failure.

 

I did exactly what you are planning to do on my 2006. Mine had peeled off more than 50% and was rusting

hardest part was sanding down to bare metal, but definitely recommend doing so.

I didn’t use anything to blend the repair into the back of the cab and there is not a super noticeable edge. I created a soft edge by peeling the tape back half way. Look it up. Mines hidden anyways because of my topper.

I painted mine for less than $200, but it took a ton of prep. Four years later it still looks fine

 

@Hans Moleman i just got this done last month from a body shop in Mountain View. My roof was gone. No clear and bad rust. Roof didnt need to be replaced but body shop said tons of body work and initially, the primer "bubbled"? so they needed to sand it more aggressively? I'm not a body guy so whatever... I just wanted the repair done.

Cost me $850 otd to repair it professionally. South bay area (norcal) covid-period labor rates.

Just wanted to give you an idea if you dont undertake this yourself.

 

On mine the roof was way past gone and the the hood and bumper were on their way.
I let it go for too long, so labor on the repaint was $$$.
I learned my lesson.

 

The clear coat on my wheel flares is peeling off. I'm interested in suggestions here.

 

One of mine has just started to bubble and well. As soon as the weather warms up that will be on my list to do.

 

Skipping the primer may cost you longevity down the road on your repair. After you sand it you may find the basecoat needs to be redone anyway as you may sand through the color in spots when prepping it. There have been some complaints on the duplicolor brand basecoat not spraying well by a number of people. I have not used this brand myself but have been looking for options other than duplicolor because the reviews on the spray can of their basecoat weren't that good.
I'll be doing my mirrors and hood scoop on my '07 soon.

 

My hood was acting the same with new primer, as soon as it was sanded, cleaned, and sprayed it bubbled.. Not sure what Toyota used to try to sabotage us but it seems to be working. Just meant more time and work

 

If you're not shooting for perfection, a couple color matched rattle cans from automotive touch up, a can of clear, and some prep work/materials and it would end up looking about like the rest of the paint on your 15 year old truck.

Somebody did a number on the paint on my 1st gen with acid of some sort back in the day - took it down to bare metal on the hood and roof - for a few C notes and a day in the driveway it looked pretty damn nice and lasted at least until I sold the truck.

 

I had the issue with my hood and Leer topper. With that and lots of redneck pinstripes down the sides, I opted to apply Monstaliner to the entire truck. It was lots of prep but cost me around $700 to do it all. I am still working on some other upgrades and waiting on clips and other small parts to complete. I know it is not for everyone but it definitely suits my needs.

 

monstaliner is rad, i did my old 2 door explorer with it...smells terrible though, I still get a headache to this day sometimes if I smell a strong epoxy lol

 

Id say just get a vinyl wrap paint match and wrap that bitch.

Mine has lasted 4 years

No maintenance, replace when it starts to fade.

Clear coat on my roof was just starting to fade so I decided to wrap it in carbon fiber vinyl since I was putting on a roof rack anyways. Spray off the dirt with a water hose and done. No need to worry about waxing or any of that.

Looks fantastic! The clearcoat on my roof and hood is also on it's way "out." Love the look! Still on the fence about taking it to a shop to be repainted, but I might go with a wrap like this.

 

The wraps are really nice looking but the downside is approx. a 5-year life span. IF you don't get it off before it starts cracking it becomes a major deal removing it

 

Also, in my area, i was quoted ~$500 to wrap my roof by a shop. I was not confident in my ability to do this myself satisfactorily.

The quote by a body shop was $700-800 to paint the roof.

I decided that the $700-800 paint job was the better option for finish and longevity versus wrapping the roof for $500.

For the skilled DIYer, wrapping would be a better value.

 

My Tacoma is in the body shop for front side damage due to a recent accident. The body shop said they can repaint my roof for $750. I told them to go ahead and do it. This saves me the hassle and there is a warranty on the paint.
