You’ll be fine with the stock gears for quite some time, the MT is geared very well.

There’s some guys running on stock gears and 35s like @95tojo a few have gone to 4.88 w/ 35s like @Sociopenguin the only MT I know with 5.29 is @Round the world because his truck is super heavy

the manual isn’t in desperate need of a regear like the ATs

They will only correct the instrument cluster. If you want to change shift points, you need a tune.

For my everyday driving routine here in the Midwest, stock gears get me by.

However, when I was driving through a super windy Kansas and then up the the mountains in Colorado, I was hating life. Depends on what your terrain is. 4th gear screaming on the interstate of Kansas was pretty annoying..

Offroad wise, 4lo isn't bad at all. 4hi is pretty worthless going through fields and USFS roads tho.

We’re running 5.29s with 31.8” tires with the manual. We have a full time mounted camper, thus we’re very heavy, 6,800 lbs with 33 gallons of gas, recovery gear, otherwise empty. Im very happy with the regearing but realize that with the weight we’ll only be driving 46 mph at 3,500 rpm at 7,000’ to 10,000’ up mountain passes in CO. Ie with our weight we’re still pretty slow.

if you’re planning on being below GVWR I’d stick with 4.88s

This is information I need Thank you! Actually I had this master plan to buy a trailer and live out of it for most of the year. So if I'm maxing out weight, with all the armor and a trailer with a MT, 5.29 is the way to go i take it.
Probably just a bachelor style 3 season trailer, the 4 seasons trailers would put me over weight for sure. But if there's anyone that can reiterate on that...

I'm getting that impression after reading these threads. gears on the MT sound better all around, Towing and capability. Im going to start with the lift, rear lockers and all the other goodies first before regearing.

If you're going to add a locker to an existing taco open diff then I'd regear then as you'll save close to $1,000 in labor

Sure thing. Yeah with that weight it wouldn't hurt regearing with 5.29s. just realize that at 75 mph with the tach at 2,500 rpm you'll now be doing 65 mph at 2,500

Regearing and lockers should be done at one time.

That is true! I was already contemplating this actually. Buy off the lot and regear immediately. Still building this master plan in my head. If I got a DCSB TRD Sport MT, what you you be doing first?

Regear and lockers is a pretty penny, and doing the lift is aswell. for me one has to come first. To be practical and realistic.
I think what I'll do, being MT, keep the stock gears for a while do the lift and other parts first.

I want to do this right the first time... been down this road before. Buy nice or Buy Twice... for me 3rd times a charm haha!

I re geared my 2019 AT to 5.29 at 5,000 miles. It’s been the best mod I’ve done. As other MT guys have stated You could probably get by with stock gearing but for full time towing max payload a re gear is gonna be a very worthwhile mod. I’d go 4.88’s if I had a MT.

Fortunately I was able to add a suspension lift at the same time of the re gear. Originally I was only going to do a rear locker.

I ended up adding a front locker to my regear after Tacoma world influenced me. as you stated, Buy once cry once!

If anybody in SD buys the assembled clamshell and third member and needs help installing I have a friend that can install for around $350-400. I got quoted $700-800 for the swap at a couple local shops. We just did mine, took a while for the front but now that we’ve done it all it should take a lot less time. Send me a PM if you need help

Amen! So when the time comes to get my trailer, ill have to think of regearing first.
Until then I think putting in a lift and other goodies first is the plan

You think a MT TRD Sport will handle towing max weight cross country with 4.88s?
This would be a dream TacoMobile if I could tow maybe a 22ft trailer/house around the country and wheel when I want. Im a traveling Gypsy. Im a Boilermaker/Welder. Taking my life on the road full time, so this is the real deal for me.
Thank you all for your input.

    Buy once cry once. Yeah.
I’d do basic armor first. Then lift and tires. See how you like it. Gearing can come later. I did mine at 38k.

Why go with the Sport, when you can have the OR with locker already installed?

My plan was to add all the weight first:
    • 4:88 gears with an ARB locker up front (3rd members built by ECGS),
    • OVTune CPU flash (4:88 & 33" specific tune),
    • Rock Sliders (OCF),
    • Slimline Bumper (SSO) with Winch (Smitty X-20),
    • Diff Skid (BAMF),
    • Gas Tank Skid (M.O.R.E. offroad aluminum)
    • ARB Dual Compressor (for front locker)
    • Full Skid Package (M.O.R.E. offroad aluminum)
Now, after adding all that weight, I determined what suspension I'd need to get the ride height correct, and I expected to do a few adjustments along the way. Suspension:
    • Hammer Hangers,
    • Spindle Gussets,
    • LCA gussets,
    • Leaf Pack,
    • UCA,
    • Airbags,
    • MRA Shocks,
    • MRA Coilovers with 352 coils and 1/4" top spacer,
    • Custom Bumpstop Plate Rear,
    • Durobumps up front,
    • 17x9 wheels,
    • 33" Toyo AT3 E-rated tires.
That's how I did it. Truck handles like a dream, especially with a lot of weight like my Northstar Truck Camper. Picture here. Install Pics here. Now, I'm looking at brake kits and upper coil bucket tower gussets. It never ends! GL!

They are out there. Really it comes down to cab configuration.

You basically have 2 options for the MT
    DCSB TRD OR / PRO
    ACLB TRD SPORT

It’s also worth noting, the OR will have ATRAC and the rear elocker.
