Towing something of this size and weight would be a rare occurrence.

Son is looking to purchase a car but does not have his driver's permit yet.

Putting the car on a trailer was an option of getting it home.

i'm sure the computer didn't say it wasn't possible. it said it wasn't safe. who knows why.. maybe weight or something.. and why pull the drive shaft and not just put the t-case in neutral?

Good lord people... I tow that much and more regularly. The tacoma will tow that just fine. It's you that has a lower limit than the truck. If Toyota says the truck will tow 6400 lbs then that means regularly. The only thing I have done to mine is add more leaf springs to help with tongue loads. Now... this is assuming the 3.5 is just as good as the 4.0 for towing. It has 40 more hp after all.

I'll mimic what most others have said.

The Tacoma can do it, though it is not 'enjoyable' by any stretch.

Pulled home an M3 on a personal trailer last summer. Went from Phoenix (close to sea level) up to Flagstaff (7,000 ft up) over the course of ~120 miles.

Averaged 13.3 mpg. Did 60 the whole way. Used ECT button and S4 on the three substantial hills.

A month or so prior to this, rode with a buddy in his 3500 diesel Ram to pick up a Corvette, using the same freeway. Did 75 mph the whole way and had no idea it was back there. Way more enjoyable.

U-haul tow dolly. Minimal rental fee for a day. I did one like that recently with a Tacoma. Got it home just fine. Done deal.

For trailers with electric brakes, I 100% agree on the trailer brake controller.

U-Haul trailers (at least every one that I have ever rented) have a hydraulic system as part of the trailer hitch mechanism itself. When you brake in the towing vehicle, it engages a little master cylinder on the u-haul trailer that applies the trailer brakes.

Can’t do that on this particular model Jeep, nothing to do with weight. You can flat tow with some changes, or (obviously) all 4 wheels on trailer, but transfer case in neutral will not completely disconnect both drive shares from turning. So that’s why we pulled the driveshaft on a dolly, as transfer case in neutral will still make the front wheels try to climb out of the dolly. It’s a strange / stupid setup, I agree, but it’s what it is.
Not the exact Jeep model in question, but you get the idea.
