I never win the lottery or do you mean the river? Hadn’t been down there in a few months. Too much going on in the main river lately. Did get to spend a good bit of time on the Hiwassee this fall.

I bought this cheap Pfluger fly rod a few years ago and suck at catching anything with it. Actually I got decent at catching bushes behind me if that counts. I've read reviews that vary from it being a decent budget starter to a pile of trash that just doesn't work. The question I have is if there is a benefit to buying a higher quality rod to learn with or if I just suck and it's not the rod's fault.

Start on a farm pond or other wide open space that likely has blue gills or other pan fish. Not likely to get snagged on the back cast and the fish should keep you busy.

I’d say keep it, and keep practicing. Always look behind you before casting. No need to make hero casts starting off. Move to a better position for shorter casts, unless you think you’ll scare the fish.

Even the best rods will catch bushes if you’re not paying attention.

what sucks is that I have to use 5x-6x to fit the tippet through the eye.

for example, maxima ultra green 4lb is too thick. Some of the trout I chase can snap 6x on a single head shake after the turn. However, the take is something of beauty

Made it out the last few days of 2020. Had hoped to catch a red band trout but ended up catching multiples of these species. The pike minnows put up a pretty solid fight, 19" was the biggest and a 17" rainbow that hammered my fly. Found it interesting in which presentation the two preferred.
