I have seen the opposite. As a Homeowners claims adjuster in the 1990s I went to a house that had burned to the ground (due to an EV1 malfunction) and the family of 5 had escaped with just their clothes on their backs.

NO INSURANCE. They were renters, and I was there for the house only (landlord insurance). They could not understand why I couldn't do anything for them, first appealing to my good nature, then turning to curses and insults at me and the insurance company I worked for at the time. I heard the gamut about how heartless I was because I couldn't pay for their hotel lodgings that night. I did feel bad at first but after they started haranguing me (even their teenage daughter was cussing at me) I quickly got over it and told them to step aside, that I was only concerned about the house.

Reminds me a lot of some of the caustic posts in this thread against @tonykarter , he does speak the truth. You get what you pay for, and the contract is provided to you before anything has happened to you.

Chinese aftermarket parts? Did you pay for a policy that states OEM parts only?

Pipe burst in your yard? Did you pay for Service Line coverage?

Insurance is a bet you make with a large company. In order to win the bet something bad has to happen to you. It's not a "savings account" where you can tell them that "I've been with you for X years and therefore you owe me", it's all about what the contract language says.

You did read your policy before things went bad did you?
