The transmission has always been fine same with the V6 engine. Both strong as a moose and reliable.

The issue has always been the parameters set for the software of the ECU which controls the shifting.

With tsb-0092-20 it’s a non issue for 2019-2020 and the 2021s automatically have the new ECU parameters.

Trucks are jackrabbits now

 

I wonder if I install a 2021 ECU module to 2016-18 trucks and they'll drive like 2021. Transmissions, engines for the 3rd gen for 6 years are the same, just the ECU modules are different.

 

I wouldn’t think the software would be backward compatible to the technology and mechanism of those years.

Better off writing Toyota and demanding a TSB reprogramming same as the 2019-2020 Tacoma trucks.

 

Oh man... Are you familiar with the problems of the 2019-2020s?

You say your truck keeps in the 2K-2.5K rpm range? That’s good.

The problem we had was the truck was programmed to always find 1100 rpms and sit there.

If you want the powerband range then that is what S-Mode is for. Put it in S-Mode 3 and ride that powerband at 45+ mph.

S-Mode let’s you get the powerband at any speed you like.

 

2020-21 4 cyl auto tranny shifts nicely now too and engine power is up compared to a 2017 I drove. The 4 cyl no longer feels lethargic and underpowered.
