So excited, time to see what these beasts are capable of. Found an opportunity to get it off-road. It handled it great, completely unfazed. Looking forward to the next time because, yes, there will be a next time. Will have questions about the need to air-down and best pressures. Now excited to mod, where to start? Maybe some traction boards? A winch for sure. Probably a bigger front bumper with shackles. Maybe the hitch-mounted shackle for the rear too. Can't be too careful. It was scary but exciting at the same time. I don't want to get ahead of myself and exceed my abilities. I'll take it slow for sure.

    Well, 25%.

    Just the one tire.

Next time I'll probably try 2 tires...

    Happy New Year!

Go over to the recovery section of the forum and start your learning.

You’re going to want at least solid front and rear recovery points that accept shackles. Traction boards would be a solid investment until you get a winch and winch mount. Until then get a hitch mounted shackle and replace the front recovery point with a beefier version.

Carry a come along, tree saver, shackles, kinetic rope (I use an ARB recovery strap), gloves, and a shovel. That should get you out of most trouble

It looks like you only got about 6 inches 'off road'. Where are you, on your neighbors lawn?
Just kidding. Now go get that thing dirty!

    Welcome to the rollercoaster.

    • Today it's a fantastic high of "I can't believe I went that far."
    • Tomorrow is going to be "I just pinstriped every. single. panel. Fuckfuckfuckfuck!"
    • The day after is going to be "I can't believe I went that far."

I'll give the rare advice. Be patient with it. Make damn sure you need it before you buy it.

    Have fun.

OP, more importantly, send me a ton of snow ! :)

@JMcFly has good suggestions. I am taking it slow. Upgraded the tires. Then focused on recovery via front and back. My goal is that the truck is ready for someone to pull me out or for me to pull someone else out. No need for winch because I am doing what I call light to medium off roading. But in the snow I want the ability to pull people out -- which I happen to do a lot of, strangely.

Throwing out my strategy in case it helps -- or someone has a better plan that improves on what I am doing. :). This is my short term plan. As I move forward, I will figure out what I need -- and more importantly what I don't need -- and go from there:

Front: BP Fabrication recovery point on the passenger side (they are in development on one for the driver's side):
    https://www.bpfabricating.com/products/tacoma-recovery-tow-hook

Back: Rhino USA recovery shackle receiver. I might just get the strap, too. Or ARB:

Best of luck to you !

Probably 'just' over road. I'm sure the road is down there some where.

Always seems weird to me that people have to pay to off road in some areas. Got to love having BLM land at easy access in the West.

That picture is so badass. Good looking white Tacoma, white snow, in whiteout background conditions.

    With your dog!

    Excellent pic!

I have a buddy who bought all of the shit everyone on tw said to, still never used any of it. get a shovel and an old piece of carpet. Then maybe a shackle and rope. Probably not doing anything crazy enough to justify all the money. Maybe you are, probably your not
