Here's a neat little steering part I finally got my hands on! NTN Japan came up with this some years back, and the development paper is posted below. It's unknown if it has the durability to survive in our applications, but given the teensy seizing U joints that are currently used on Tacoma trucks, it's worth a look-see.

This particular unit is from an OE GM application, the only OE app I have found thus far. Normally, it has stupid pricing, GM retails the replacement part for over $800! Some of the big parts houses have it for $400.

The shaft spline where it connects to rack is the same as what Toyota use, BUT it is too shallow to completely engage the stub. Both upper and lower connections are crimped on, so it appears there are male stubs on either side of the actual unit, a quick trip to lathe could easily have both removed, and then two shorty male stubs will be available for adapting.

With that and a urethane damper instead of rubber, I wonder how much of a different folks would feel. CVs over universals all day long.

I am excited to see these in use as I read the NTN paper a few years back and could never find one in production. May I ask you for the part number or make/model so I can get
my hands on one as well? Thanks for the info thus far.

Yes, but only because you asked politely, and you took the time to add a Freddy Krueger avatar.

Big thanks to you I ordered a couple. I never thought I would get the chance to make it happen. These should make for a unique and effective answer to my problem of a high angle steering shaft installation. Hoping to get rid of any torque pulsations in the wheel. I'm curious, did you ever use CSJ in a build?

Great to hear. No, the unit I have is still waiting on the shelf. Feel free to share your application and throw up some pics! While it's a Toyota Tacoma forum, many of us are gear heads and have a broad range of auto interests. The tech of applying these will likely be of interest.
