Are the 2020-2021 4 cyl automatics still lethargic performers like the '16-'17's were?

3 years ago I rented a 2017 2WD SR 4 cyl automatic and was disappointed with it's lackluster throttle responsiveness and the need to hold the throttle down 1/3rd or more to maintain freeway speeds.

I am wondering if the 2020-21's behave the same or do they now have more responsive "get up and go" and can they maintain freeway speeds more effortlessly??

I've read reports claiming the V6 automatics have been improved in this regard and wonder if the 4 cyl automatics have too? Thanks (asking as a potential buyer of a '20 or '21 4 cyl).

I think they only have like 150 HP or so, really can't expect neck snapping performance in a 2 ton truck.

    I mean...the V6 is arguably “lethargic”...

159 hp and 3,980 lbs at best.

Slightly better power to weight ratio than a prius, and worse than whats in my taco. And my taco is not fast.

Best best is to get an MT.

I’ve owned both a 2018 SR & 2020 SR & both are slow but I attribute some of that to a 4:30 rear axle. I can hook my 18ft boat up to the back & it’s not much slower

You have to go back to 2017 to find one.

I can't speak for the 4cyl, but the lackluster throttle response and low end complaints WRT the v6 can be mitigated somewhat with tuning.

Never felt like that in my truck, even on stock tune. With the tune, its a beast.

The 4 cylinder is slow. The pedal commander def makes it drive "regular" though.

PC threw a CEL and the truck went into limp mode on my buddy's 17 sport, after about 6-7 months. He removed it and all good now. A lot of reviews online say the same thing regarding all kinds of vehicles.

Sprint booster seems to be a better choice IMHO.

I've had mine for over 2 years and its fine. I'm sure it's operator error.

One could just push the pedal harder. I remember these things being popular with the MINI crowd, but my ankle still pivots and that's free

Hm, not sure. Its simply plug and play, a lot of similar reviews online. I think its impossible to screw up when installing PC, i could be very wrong though.

The only time i had complaints on the stock tune was when rev matching. Pedal felt dead at times, even if you mash it and hold it to the floor. Other than that, it was perfectly fine driving around.

I'd suspect any check engine lights are from people touching the brake pedal and gas pedal at the same time.

My 4 cylinder days are gone but if I did have to buy one it would have to be a MT .

Those are super rare in Canada. The 4 cylinder isnt even offered here anymore....take rate was probably too low.
