Winch learning process. More naive than I realized.

Greetings TW,

So I got a winch and an SSO Slimline bumper.
I opted for no access holes not realizing I wouldn't have a view of the cable for respooling.

Looking down from above with the hood open, the solenoid is in the way. I guess this means I either relocate the solenoid or cut some access holes?? Damn.

Also, the fairlead points downward at about a 45 degree angle. Are there any issues with that using a synthetic line? The SSO product seems topnotch, so I can't imagine this hasn't been figured out a long time ago. I'm just a little nervous in my winch-newness.

I'd appreciate any advice from some experienced winchers. @theesotericone?

Setup is fine. The only issue is lack of access to the winch which you are aware of the choices you have to make. Personally, I would cut the opening in the bumper. Accessing the winch from the hood would be too difficult especially in situations when you really need it.

 

fairlead angle is fine, the winch line will rub on the fairlead as it should.

I would have opted for holes to access the winch because reaching down from the grill is a pain and will be even more when you do any sort of life.

also dont forget to put a cut off between the winch power lead and battery

I just needed a little reinforcement.

The setup is otherwise really solid.

I will add some sort of disconnect between the battery and winch.

This is what I did for an

$33 Fastronix 3/8" 2 Post (SPST) 180/1000 Amp High Current Battery Disconnect Switch

on / off switch between the battery and winch.



My buddy made me a mount for the switch.

 

The Hawse fairled is designed to work with synthetic rope and will be totally fine. I've winched with my rope at over 90 degrees to the fairlead without any issues.

The rope will respool itself fairly well but being able to see it is useful. That way you can make sure it's spooling evenly and avoid pinches. Can you reach the free spool knob without having to open the hood? That's also very useful to have easy access too.

As mentioned, I disconnect is a very good idea. If a solenoid fails it causes the winch to spool in or out depending on what solenoid failed. Out is just a PIA because you have take care of the birds nest of rope. In is really bad. You can imagine what happens. lol

Here's the disco I use. It's rated at 350A continuous and 600A intermittent. IE, it won't fail accept under the most extreme winch stresses.

Which winch did you get?

 

I got the Engo 10k.

Unfortunately I can't reach the free spool knob with the hood closed. If I have to I will cut a hole in the bumper. I just want to think it through first.

I did order a Blue Sea 6006 switch today. So I'll have a disconnect.
