    Not everything improves with change.

We thought spin on filters were the schnitz when they replaced the cartridge filters of yore.

It was surprising to see the return of the cartridge. I'm glad my truck has the spin on.

And I'm glad my transmission still has a dipstick. :D

I was just pointing out the fact that the 2.7 has been around forever.

The first time I changed the oil on my 2.7, I’d swear King Kong was at the factory installing the filters.

I have the 2.7 and I just picked up an oil filter socket at Walmart for like $5 or something. Fits just fine. I use that with an extension and it comes right off. I "break" it loose with that and then spin it off by hand and try to make as little mess as possible..... yeah right lol!

I found a “cup type” filter wrench for mine at AdvancedAutoParts for 6 or 7 dollars. I forget the size though. The first time is the hardest. It’s on there super tight from the factory.

Simply hammer a screwdriver through the old filter and twist it off.
Then do the same in reverse order to install the new filter.

    *don't actually try this.

Me too, it sucks and makes a huge mess but sometimes it's the only way. FWIW both times I've had to do it was on engines with filters which hadn't been removed in years.

Funny story: A couple of years ago I was pulling an old in-line six (Ford 144 from a mid '60's Falcon) apart in my garage for a project. Everything came apart pretty well except for the oil filter! It was stuck tight; I tried all the tricks, even heated it with a torch with no luck. Just before I got it off one of my neighbors stopped-by to see what I was working-on. As He was walking up my driveway he told me that he wasn't sure who'd taught me how to do an oil change but generally the engine doesn't need to come-out of the car! He thought it was funny. At the time I, covered in grease, dirt and oil failed to the see the humor but we had a good laugh about it a little while later after I got the filter off with an angle grinder!

My 1st 2 rigs were 2 .7s. I don’t recall them being too difficult. I always used a quart sized Zip Lock bag over the filter once it was loosened a bit to reduce the mess.

The 4.0 will spoil you though. I changed the oil in my wife's and daughter's cars the other day and thought what's this crawling under and laying on my back bullshit. o_O

I’ve been on the planet a long time, and have used strap type wrenches, sockets, and even a screwdriver in one instance where the strap didn’t work. I prefer a socket. This post says for the 2.7 the socket to use is 73mm 14 flats (2013 post). Anyone know if this is correct? One post says it’s tight, another says 74mm is a little to big.
Oil filter wrench size: 73mm or 74mm?

I used a 20oz water bottle, fit perfectly under the drain tube when wedged into the lower hoses.

Oh, I know what you mean about the K&N filters ... Pretty cool that they add a hex-nut on the bottom ... But you do pay for that extra convince though. And I really don't care if a filter costs $15.00 or $5.00 as long as it's quality. I may skimp on other things (Like maybe not waxing the paint often enough).. But I'm kinda' anal about mechanical maintenance and at times I may go a bit overboard. But since I already bought a six-pac of the Toyota filters (Highly rated on whatever site you might look at, as to 'What's The Best Oil Filter' thing), I need to adapt to what they have cuz .. I get 3 oil/filter changes for 'free' at the dealer and with what I have already, I'm kinda' set up for the first 90K ..

LOL! Hey, I had a 71' Honda 750 once... Talk about a 3 hour job along with a six-pack of beer, doing an oil/filter change. And it better be perfect or it was gonna piss oil everywhere .. LOL!

My neighbor has a newer Japanese cruiser and for some reason has to pull the front header to change the oil. Pretty crazy.

You can't see the drain bolt behind my big toe, but it is right over the header and darn close to the deployed centerstand. Thankfully, never any mess and quick wipe of the header to clean things up. The 6k OCI is quite nice also.
