Yeah, the extra positional and angular adjustability of the clip nut (still tinnerman nut to me even if it has a full nut) seems like a very good idea on this application.

I've drilled out thousands but never in that type of situation.

You are both absolutely correct about keyed rivnuts. The truly difficult thing about removing is how do you hold the bolt or screw from spinning while drilling. Usually I try to pull the item or device away from the structure with enough force to cause the nut or bolt/screw head to jam on something.... Or use a dremel to cut a notch in the fastener head to hold while you drill.

That said, after working for HOURS (in the past) to remove a single spinning riv-nut without destroying the aircraft structure, I am very hard pressed to use one except in situations where they can be held from the rear (somehow) in case of a failure. (and that is with a keyed rivnut).

Also as Tony noted, their tension capability is rather poor, but I suppose its still probably ample...

Most rivets and other deformed fasteners are not meant for tension applications. In places where deformed fasteners are used for tension joints, you will see the attaching fasteners loaded in shear.


This was why I was suggesting the use of a backing washer or plate for the rivnut application. @Bertw192 came up with the best idea of threaded and keyed plate.

But again, it is useless with the poor design of the handle.

Another way of looking at it, if the material in the 'rivet' has low enough yield strength to be deformed during installation, it isnt strong enough to be a really be a very good quality nut.

(just some comparative data happen to have handy in front of me for tension strength)...
A .25-28 Riv-Nut (NAS 1329) is good for 1820 lb tension when its made from aluminum, and 3500 lb tension when its made from carbon steel...
A normal AN4 bolt (125 ksi standard) is good for 4170 lb tension (Mil-Hdbk-5).
And a normal structural nut (such as AN365-4) is good for 6000 lb tension (MIL-N-25027)

So not including durability, the (typical) rivnut is going to be weaker than a typical structural bolt, and much weaker than a typical nut.
But durability is the bigger issue (for me).
