Amp install help

I’m wanting to install a jl audio 5 channel amp and want some advice. 2015 double cab TRD Sport. Factory radio (non JBL) and aftermarket speakers.

First. Under the drivers seat is what I’m planning. Where is everyone tying into the speakers? At the head unit or off the wires going to speakers near door? How hard is it to run new wires from amp through the door?

Second. Should I mount the crossovers in front door or under seat with amp?

Last. Any advice on running power wire and ground and does it really need to be a large gauge?

I have an amp under each seat. I ran new speaker wire to each speaker because the factory wiring would no longer support the upgraded demands. Get a fish tape or clothes hanger to get through the short rubber grommets. Plenty of room in the doors for the crossovers, plus that’s way less wire to run. Wire gauge should be whatever is necessary for your load/length. Same for your speaker wire. Should be able to find a chart online.

 

There are several ways you can install it. I installed professionally for over 3 decades. I would grab the speaker wires behind the head unit.

Since you're using a factory head unit you don't have RCA outputs on your stereo. Your 5 channel amp may or may not have high level inputs, if it does you'll be running 8 pairs of speaker wire, if it doesn't or if you prefer to use RCA cables you can buy two RCA converters and run 4 pairs of speaker wires.

There is no need to run new speaker wires into the door.

If the crossovers are passive (don't have a 12v power and ground wire) mount them in the door, if the crossovers are electronic mount them near the amp.

Don't loop all if the wiring into a bundle as you run the wires under the seat, keep the amp input wires separate from the rest of the wires.

Use sandpaper and sand off the paint where you attach the ground to the cab floor. Keep the ground wire relatively short.

The size of the 12v power wire is important, for a 5 channel amp I would use 4 gauge.

Please use a minimum of 8 gauge Copper wire for the amp power wire. Stay away from Copper Clad Aluminum. Sure CCA works, but.... Oxygen Free Copper is just better.
This might work for you. I had one when I was running a single amp. it worked pretty good for over a year. just find the one for your model truck.

I would also recommend the wired remote for gain control. The factory head unit isn't easy to dial in if you listen to all types of music.


I ran power wires down the drivers side and RCA down passenger side to prevent any noise. My amps are behind the rear seat
