So I've always wondered why there is "play" in the shifter.

I installed a URD short throw shifter this weekend and noticed the rod with the ball on the end (no jokes please) that goes into part 33530F has play in it. The rod/ball has no play coming from the transmission but the part 33530F allows the entire handle to have "play" in the stick bu design.

Why isn't the rod/ball going straight up (again no jokes) without the other piece (33530F)? The arrow is where the play is allowed.

I remember my VW bug with no play at all. Just a straight metal stick for a shifter and no built in "play".

I’m going to go with easy of manufacturing and looks.
It’s probably be harder to manufacture the road as on piece since there is a vast difference in diameter.
Plus you’d be polishing or painting the upper rod.

Most looks, since the boot doesn’t go all the way up to the knob.

    That’s my guess!??

that arrow points to the place where the lower small dia. piece is attached the the top piece with rubber.
Design is to stop engine vibration in handle.

I'm thinking it is for those with less upper body strength to get a running start on gear shifts.

It’s a two piece shifter there is a rubber isolator there to dampen drivetrain vibrations. That can wear out over time and can be replaced or rebuilt. There’s a few threads around about repairing the worn rubber section.
