K&N filter fitment

Just installed a K&N in the factory air box. Anyone else find that they are slightly too big, like 1/8" or something? Just enough to be super frustrating to install because it keeps popping out on one side or the other.

Mostly just venting, and curious if I'm alone on this.

I decided to remove the charcoal thing while I was at it. At 150K miles, it was looking pretty grungy. But I know it's a controversial move.

 

The K&N filters fit much better in the trash can. Sorry I could not resist. But seriously... in my experience, the seal around the perimeter of the filter needs to be positioned just right for the lid to close. Try pushing the filter a bit rearward (or forward) as the hinge action of the lid tends to scoot my filter around when trying to close the lid. I use standard paper filters or the aFe Pro Dry reusable filter.

 

Im with DGXR. Those oiled filters only cause problems with the MAF later down the road.

I'd go this route, but too painful to drop another $50 after buying the K&N. I have about 70K on my Jeep with K&N and no issues. Just wish it fit better... I think it's good, but nagging feeling it might not be in there exactly right since it was such a battle.

 

I hear ya they are pricey. So is the K&N too big? If so could you trim the silicone edges little by little until it fits better?

 

Just barely. I suppose with some effort I could shave it bit by bit until it was just right. It's in now, so I'm kind of hoping it'll just conform after being in there a while.

 

One thing you might check is that it’s not facing the wrong way. There are two indentations on the forward facing section on the bottom side. Might be worth checking, may just need to be turned 180*

 

There's also a corner more square than the others, at least on mine. I think it would be nearly impossible to put it in wrong. Although, based on the symptoms I described, I could see how you could suspect me of it...

K&N 63 go big or go home. I had the AFE pro dry drop in before.

 

I thought about it, but $300+. Can you tell the difference? And I also wonder if there is any effect for removing that secondary box on top of the engine? OEM must have put it there for some reason.

 

maybe a slight performance increase, it makes some noise. I like it though. Worth the money? - thats debateable. I have a magnaflow catback system on the way, I think the intake and exhaust should work nicely together.

 

Agreed. I like mine, too. Makes the engine look and sound badass, and I haven't touched the filter in 3 years. Stays clean.

 

LOL that is such massive overkill for the 4 cylinder, but then again, going big is your whole point... makes me wonder why no V6.

I assume you are aware the truck had an OEM CAI.
