I haven’t used much of my remote start but since it’s winter time I’d like to remote start my truck but no longer remote starts, i dunno if it has anything to do with the Toyota remote services which expired in December. Does anyone know if the factory remote start can only be used with remote services subscription. If that’s the case I’m just gonna get a viper remote start and install that

update: so the problem i had was the battery in my fob, the remote start does work it was just i had to be standing by the truck for it to work, usually i would do from my house and i guess weak battery and 30+ feet it didn’t work

Yes, apparently if you don't have remote services, you can't use either the phone app or your key fob. Many expected to lose the phone app but not the fob. Really disappointing but it seems many people have encountered this.

Man I hate subscription ware. I can barely stand that I now have to pay an annual fee to use Microsoft office, but at least that one goes on the sales pitch of being able to update to the most recent version.

Subscription cars make no damn sense and I want no part of it. I didn't buy into it when OnStar rolled out, and I especially won't buy into this one. I'd rather rip those SOS buttons out and replace them with something more useful, like another damn light switch or something. It's a frankly amoral business model and I hate that everyone's figured out how well it works.

Have you thought about just going the perpetual license route. I paid $110 (Amazon sale) for office home 2019 - despite the claim of it being "classic" and a snap shot in time of 365, it has been getting feature updates for over a year now. Microsoft reversed their business model years ago for windows and office, you're more so paying for onedrive than anything.

I’m not a fan of subscription ware also, and $80 a year don’t sound too bad but i can get a viper remote start/alarm system for about $150 and install myself and I’ll know that I’ll have extra security on my truck if someone was to mess with it

You can get around this by installing an aftermarket remote start such as the one by N2.

Wow what a effing joke, one of the reasons I went with the TRD Sport over the SR5 was for the remote start.

Great. Mine expires tomorrow. I’d thought I’d be able to use the key fob for now

IMO just pay for it yearly and be done with it. I have the N2 designs on my truck and it has a yearly subscription for the cell option too. Yeah, you can use the remote without the subscription but the range is shit (Toyota problem not N2). I only added the N2 because in 19 remote start wasn't an option.

I wouldn't like paying the yearly fee either (it's total bullshit they disable the fob though). But I'd have preferred not to add an aftermarket alarm and the potential headaches that can come with it if I could have avoided it (again not a dig at N2 they're great I just trust factory stuff over aftermarket). IMO 7 bucks a month is cheap for the convenience of remote start and not having to add an aftermarket unit.

I was pretty bummed when my key fob remote start stopped working. I ended up deciding I'd just pay for remote connect during the winter and cancel it once it starts to warm up. Kind of a pain but $28 a year isn't terrible.

This makes me glad I have an SR5. If I want remote start I will pay one time and not monthly. I think that sucks Toyota is heading down the subscription road.....their vehicles are not cheap to begin with either.

This was mentioned in another thread and someone made a great analogy.

If you cancel your cable TV subscription you don't expect to lose volume control on your TV remote.

The connected services app is complete garbage and full of glitches. The whole situation is complete b.s.

I'm assuming the Canadian and US app is the same. And it's a steaming pile of shit. It often doesn't connect to the truck or connects so slowly despite me living in a metro area with fantastic LTE coverage.

Another thing: I wish the deactivation of the engine on a remote start wasn't the door opening and was the brake pedal instead. Is there a mod to make this happen?

Nope. No mod available. According to Toyota it’s a “security” thing to have the door turn the truck off. Complete bull. I’ve had numerous cars (yes, push button) that only turned off if you didn’t have your foot on the brake when pressing the start button.

Half assed engineering in my opinion. But, it is what it is. In all actuality it’s not that difficult to just push the button again, but it’s still a small inconvenience none the less.

I wish I would have been informed of this when I bought the truck.

I’m assuming it’s in the computer if it detects door unlocking it shuts off, i installed a viper remote start in my sisters 2018 rav4 it’s got push start and does the same thing
