How do you carry your propane tank?

Anyone know if it is OK to carry it on its side as long as I set it upright when I use it?

 

I would not do this. The valve has a special hole to relieve the pressure for emergency and if it engages during the horizontal positioning of the tank the liquid gas may come out. It's not good for other stuff around and very dangerous. BTW, there are horizontal tanks for vans.

 

Thanks for response. Doesn’t give me many good choices. I have a camper shell with a Prinzu above and a 10 lb tank. Don’t want to keep it in the bed in case it vents into the enclosed shell and if I put it upright on the Prinsu it sticks up too high. Guess I’ll start looking at horizontal tanks

I have one of those small 5lb propane thanks that I wanted to mount to my BAMF bed rack in this area. I have this in mind but wanted to check if there was anything better out there. Thank you in advance.

 

You may want to look at Powertank. They offer a couple different size mounts for the smaller size propane tanks and sell adapters for tube mount. Price is a bit high but I’ve been happy with the one I bought.

 

And here are the obligatory pictures of how I mounted my tank.
I ended up putting mine in the bed using a Powertank mount attached at top to the bed rails and then cut a piece of 0.125” aluminum to bridge down to two of the screws on top of the passenger side cubby. The mount wobbled too much when only attached to the bed rails so the added plate stabilized it with the two lower mounting points. The bed rails were found to be outboard of the cubby screws so I finished the installation with 2 spacers to tilt the tank back towards vertical. Here are the parts and installation.

 

Is it ok to have the tank at a slight angle? I’d like to hook a 5# tank to the side of my bed rack but it’s not totally vertical.

For the people that have used a 20# tank to refill 1# bottles. Have you ever noticed a decrease in pressure on the 20# tank after filling a couple bottles? It seems like when I do this my 20# tank looses pressure after filling the green bottles and when I hook it back up to my grill the flame is significantly reduced, and cant be turned up no matter how far I turn the nob. Last spring I even went and got a new tank, used it on the grill with good results, filled 5 green bottles, and then hooked it back up to the grill. Same result with a greatly reduced flame on my grill. I cant tell if its just a finicky grill or if others have experienced this as well.

 

I looked at this for a full minute trying to figure out if you replaced your FRC bed, just riveted in some load decking or had a strange "Decked" like system before realizing it's a M105 trailer.

 

I had the same idea of mounting mine on the driver side, rear, bed-rack post. Though I thought it might be safer to mount it on the inside, over the tonneau cover, under the tent. My kitchen slides out on that side and it would be easy to connect the stove hose with it there. It shouldn't be too difficult to fab up a locking mount that holds it secure. Any thought on this idea would be appreciated.

 

My 5lb tank just gets stuffed in one of the bed cabinets and packed in with other gear.

 

Hi Pearing, Can you send a close-up pic or explain how your tank is mounted. It looks like you rigged something to your standard bumper...is that right? I'm trying to store mine outside without spending $1000+ on a swing-out bumper.

I will get a picture for you tomorrow. I have revamped the whole system on the back as I hated the swing away with tire. The tank mount is on O came up with using steel and welded on to now both systems. More when you can see it.

This is the mount I came with. Welded on but could as easily be bolted to a rack. This is something that could be made as a mount that uses the receiver or possibly hangs off the tailgate. lots of options I haven't explored as I need something different. Tank bottom ring sits over the ring I made.






I keep it on with a 4 or 6 foot NRS cam strap. Needs to be revised with loops welded on or a tab to keep the strap centered. Something to do this winter...
