Terrible paint on fender flairs/bumpers?

Been doing a ton of research about buying a Tacoma been driving f150’s for years. My dealer only has like 4 trucks on the lot. One thing I noticed was the fender flairs look like they are painted with spray paint. I can see lines in them faintly that look like they are mold marks showing through for the back. . The front bumpers look dull. The paint has a different texture to it too. Is this common? It’s so bad it might be a deal killer for me. All 4 trucks looked like this some worse than others depending on the color. Pretty surprised this is passed off for new. Or maybe something happened

Yap fairly normal. If paints important to you, you should honestly pass. Toyota lacks in paint but is stronger in other areas.

Are they all stock? The flares are just black plastic and the bumpers are color matched or chrome. Seems like the dealer did something.

Not necessarily, the sport also has color matched flares. In my opinion, the sport would look better with black/unpainted.

The black flares is Trd pro only. I guess I will look at a larger sample of trucks. It seriously looks like spray paint. If it was a truck order. I would refuse delivery

The TRD Off Road also comes in black, if it will suit your needs without breaking your bank.

Not only pro. Seriously, Toyota lacks paint. If it's an issue, it's not gonna get better

That texture you speak of is the fender flare itself. They dont use smooth fender flares on these trucks. All trucks use the same fender flare, but on the sport and limited they just painted them. So you are seeing the texture of the flare.

That's correct, it's not the paint. You will see the texture of the flares to some degree on all painted Tacoma flares depending on how light is hitting them.
The paint on my '18 TRD Sport is amazing even after 2.5 years entirely outside.

The white flares on my TRD Sport looks a little different from the actual paint on the rest of the truck.

to answer the question, these are the trucks that come with fender flares color matched or unpainted:

    SR - no flares
SR w/ SX Package - unpainted
SR5 - color matched or no flares
    SR5 w/ Trail Edition - unpainted
    TRD Sport - color matched
    TRD Off-Road - unpainted
    Limited - color matched
Limited w/ Nightshade edition - color matched
    TRD Pro - unpainted

Paint tends to show differently on plastic components, such as fender flares and bumpers, compared to other body panel surface types. I’ve noticed this distinction on various makes/models. I’ve had four 3rd Generation Tacomas (two with color match flares, two with TRD Off Road black flares) and haven’t noticed the severity of the issue you mentioned.

I just rolled bed liner on my sport flares.
Eventually I will go aftermarket when I can find a set without the simulated chrome hardware.

Good for you, for taking a good look before you buy!
Every day, someone comes here to complain about the ways things are in their new truck. If only they had done their homework.

I agree with @Skydvrr - I'd drive on if you don't like it,,, you never will.

    No white!
I bought a certified pre-owned Acura, my towels would be white after waxing. Dealer said it was normal, white doesn't have clear coat. Don't know that it matters, but it sealed the deal for Chew,,, I'm not wiping the paint of a 1.5 old car.

Due to covid it’s Weird they don’t have hardly anything for sale. It wasn’t just the flairs it was the bumper covers too. Since you guys aren’t complaining it must be just what I have saw only. Some colors it showed worse on.

Some people just care about things more too. Paint is probably something you're concerned with. My paint is already all scratched and dinged up but it doesn't bother me too much. Toyota paint is thin too.

I went to a tech school half a day Jr and Sr year of highschool, and I made friends with the the teacher and guys nextdoor door in the auto body course. We used to go to car shows, cruises, etc. One thing I found, none of the paint connoisseurs were ever happy with any job they came across, resto, factory new, high end cars,,,, they all had flaws that needed pointing out. Not saying OP is that critical.

Why not just post a couple pictures so we can tell if it’s what you can come to expect or if it’s some anomaly.

3rd Gen has been out for 4-5 years, you probably see them in every parking lot you park in. You can get an idea based on what you see on the road.

I didn’t care for the look of painted flairs, part of my purchasing decision when I bought an Off Road model.

You are going to get a mixed bag of opinions here but at the end of the day our opinion isn’t going to change the fact that you don’t like what’s in your driveway at night.

My suggestion would be to look at an Off Road model.

Yeah I hear you the problem for me is the off-road models aren’t a good value to me. It’s a tuff sell when these trucks get MORE expensive than an f150 with twin turbskis and 400 horse 500 torque. I am looking at sr or sr5 and adding my own off-road goodies. Skid plates, lift, winch bumper etc. the higher. Trim trucks get too expensive. As it is unless I wanted more off road capability I wouldn’t be considering Tacoma anyway.

I am not a paint Nazi, my truck currently is covered in desert pin stripes. But it can’t start out as bad as I saw. If I can’t see it from 5 feet I probably would be happy.
