Possible Buyer

Hello, I am in the market for Toyota Tacoma. I am looking at all of these options and packages that are on these trucks and I can't decide. I know I do not want the Pro as that would be overkill for me lol, but I want something that can get me through snow and occasionally off-road. I was looking at the TRD sport with the 4WD package. I guess my question is what does the majority buy when it comes to a 3rd gen Toyota Tacoma? What package? Whatever package that I choose I want a V6 in it and 4WD.

 

You want an OR with a scoop.

 

In before this devolves into its usual "Spurht vs Orf Rode!" screech fest.

They all have slight differences in road manners. Dont take anyone's word for it here. Test drive until you know.

 

Any trim level with 4x4 will suit you just fine, test drive them as they do have different suspension packages.

 

You want a 4 cylinder automatic 2wd, you just don’t know it, yet

 

Difference between a TRD Sport and TRD Off Road:

- Sport has a hood scoop and painted fenders
- Off road has no hood scoop and black fenders

- Sport has “sport tuned” shocks
- Off road has bilstein shocks

- Off road has multi terrain select (MTS) when equipped with the automatic transmission and a locking rear differential.

Both trucks are capable off road. I went with the TRD Off-Road due to the locking rear differential.

 

Go to a dealer and poke around and drive each model. I think there are some decent differences between the SR5 and Offroad/Sport. Between the OR and sport, the differences are more subtle, things like aesthetics (hood scoop) but also a some performance (suspension, rear locker and crawl control on the OR). The limited is available if you tuck your polo shirt in while going to the transfer station, so if that's true, take a look at them too.

I drove a sport and an OR and picked the OR based on ride attributes and the extra offroad amenities in the OR (the locker and crawl control... which I've only used once in the 4 or so years I've owned it... and it didn't help get me unstuck).

 

Are you single or married? When I went from a non scooped hood to the scoop, I started noticing panties being thrown at the scoop. Your choice

 

Get a SR and slap some pro stickers, pro grill, pro suspension and 25 raptor lights on it and call it day. You're welcome.

And good luck too - you really can't go wrong with any of them in my opinion - but depends on YOUR use. I've had most of them and quite honest when I say this - my 1st gen AC MT 4 banger was and still is my favorite. Really like my turd gen too but nostalgia and my first Tacoma in for the win.

 

If v6 4x4 is your priority, I don’t see why an SR5 would not be able to meet your requirements unless you want more options and do dads? Or if you plan you upgrade any suspension, rims and tires.

IMO, go for an SR SR5 (unless you want a manual transmission) and save a bunch of money. It doesn't sound like the rear locker on the OR will be overly useful for you and I don't think the Sport really offers enough to justify the price.

Cheapest DCSB SR 4x4 at my local dealer is 31k vs the Sport at 36k.

 

Test drive, test drive, and test drive some more.

 

Off road and extensive test drive . Don’t be one of those guys ... posting here one week later my truck shifts like crap I’m trading it . Lol .... test drive ... test drive ... or just get the manual .

 

I honestly have to admit most people will never use the rear locker. I NEEDED it last winter I’m stock suspension and tires and did a winter hot springs trip with my buddies. Did perfect until we were climbing in 2’ of snow my buddy in his lifted ko2 tacoma and chains was first clearing the path I was second had to throw on the chains obviously. Was doing fine until we got to some really steep hills where I had to throw on the locker to get up. I know if I had better than stock tires I probably wouldn’t of needed the locker but I wanted to use the tires I have since I already paid for them. That was one of those times I am glad I did have the locker if not I would of been heading home!

 

i went with a sport because i thought it was just gonna be a daily driver. now it's only driven for wheeling or towing, so looking back i should have gone with the offroad. but i'm still happy with it, i can do most things without the locker

 

Everyone in here is missing the obvious most important option on these trucks... Get the color you want.

 

Do you really need a locker, crawl, etc ?
