Steel bumpers have paint, paint scratches, this could happen again and would not help OP with his emotional stress in the long run. Seems the fix here is never let the wife drive his truck again :D

That first scratch is the worst, but also from there on it’s not a big deal. It’s a truck, gonna get banged up

I backed my truck in a cinderblock half-wall in 2012; No damage beyond a tiny scuff mark! Got rear-ended by a texting driver in March 2015, and her insurance paid for a shiny new bumper!

This proves what I've been saying about Tacomas for years; No, you don't really need a backup camera...

However, the way the bumper sticks out and you no visibility below the top of the tailgate makes a backup camera an extremely nice thing to have! All 3rd Gen Tacomas have backup cameras, and your wife still managed back into something! What got damaged? Why, the bumper of course!

Put yourself in her shoes for a minute. How would you feel if you backed her car into the house?

It's just a scratch, be glad it's nothing major and don't worry about it

Is she ok? Is the house ok? If yes I wouldn't worry about that little scuff on the bumper of a truck. I'd paint the rear caps black or replace them with black caps. Maybe even replace that plastic bumper with a metal bumper. I like the aftermarket steel step bumpers. I don't think any of the fab companies here on TW build a rear step bumper. Lots of other good options from the vendors here, just no step bumper that Im aware of.

I would like to see a steel rear step bumper with an integrated hitch reciever below the step that could provide a little more clearance than the OEM bumper with hitch reciever.

I almost forgot about this; We lived in a townhouse from 2007 to 2016, and the house was a combination of cream-colored vinyl siding and red brick. My parents bought me the Tacoma not long after I got my learner's permit; Sometime between 2012 and 2015 (I got my license in 2011), I backed my truck into the brick surrounding the garage door sometime prior to 2015, which resulted in a red scuff on the back bumper and no damage to the house. Luckily, this was also BEFORE I got rear-ended by the texting driver!

As I am reading this I don't understand why the backup sensor did not alarm the close proximity to the house. Was she already within a foot? Reason I am asking is because my wife bumped into a low pole in a parking lot last week in her Rav4 which is bad for rear vision. I bought but have not yet installed the backup radar sensors to help prevent that from happening again. I have a first gen and installed a backup sensor license plate frame that works great for alerting me to objects in the rear.

Late to the game here, but good on your wife for being honest and up front about it. This is just a minor blemish. I have worse from people just rubbing up against my bumper in parking lots. Cheap replacement bumper caps or just let it go. Love your family, don't sweat the small stuff.
