I did this a few weeks back but am just now getting around to sharing with the group. I did the zip tie mod a few months ago with less than perfect results. I got a zip tie in one side of the collar and it helped but when I would turn the wheel while driving, towards the side that had the zip tie in it, I would get a faint vibration through the steering wheel, that felt like a wheel bearing going bad. It makes sense. The reason for the space, or the original rubber bushing, was for vibration isolation.
I took the zip tie back out and discarded it. I then cleaned the area in the steering shaft where the zip tie would go with brake cleaner. This is not a pleasant experience since you are contorted into a small space, in a bad position, spraying brake cleaner a few feet from your face... I digress.
Then, I dispensed clear silicone RTV onto my finger and started working it into the space that produces the 'clunk' when hitting bumps. I let the truck sit in the garage over night so the RTV could cure.
It really seems to have worked well. Time will tell how it holds up, but the clunk is gone and there is no vibration coming up through my steering shaft.

As a side note, when you're buying silicone RTV, look for the stuff that has acetic acid in it. It's the stinky stuff, but it cures better than the newer stuff, in my opinion.

Just thought I'd share the idea.
