I chose powder coating. If they get scraped, I will just use spray paint.

In my experience, if you wheel and use your sliders, nothing works well. Granite+slider = bare metal no matter what you put on. Now between the frame and the sliders I dunno. I just use rustoleum or similar.

Nothing says I had a good day better than fresh metal showing on a slider.

I tried rattle can first, but it came off from salt/sand spray the first time i drove in the snow. covered everything with POR-15 after that and havent had problems with that since. I top coated with truck bed liner. touchups are easy too.

Hmmm...interesting. Did you use an etching primer? I didnt mention I used primer at first.

Admittedly I have had fsome flaking, but none that I care about. I am sure the the POR-15 would not flake if done right.

i did also use etching primer primer. its possible that the areas that came off weren't clean enough. i wiped down with acetone and alcohol before applying. also, its worth noting that i did not strip anything before switching to POR. i just wire brushed the loose stuff off and applied POR on top of everything else.

I'm on first round of painting sliders. You have put a coat of spray paint over bedliner? I'm asking because my main concern with bedliner is the fading that can occur.

    Thanks for feedback.

i wasn't aware of that either. seems kinda weird since truck beds are exposed to sun in a lot of cases. fortunately, it is real easy to touch up

I do yes, the cheap diy bed liner has almost no UV protection. It will turn chalky and break up with sun exposure. A couple of simple coats of spray paint will offer a big improvement in protection

Thanks for all the informative posts, I’ve never even heard of POR15. I ordered bare rock sliders last November and plan on using POR15 as a base coat. The top coat will be one of the Rustoleum products. What size POR15 would should I buy?

I recall a quart was enough for two coats on my sliders

I bought a bunch of those cheapy 1” paint brushes from Home Depot to use as disposable paint brushes. Stuff is a bitch to clean.

    I forgot about this thread!

I ended up using the rattlecan method. After cleaning the metal, I applied 2 coats of Rustoleum self-etching primer, then 2 coats of Rustoleum bed liner. Along the bracket part that is bolted to the frame, I used Rustoleum gloss black instead of bedliner. My thinking was the gloss paint would not trap as much dirt and moisture as the bedliner. Not sure how valid the idea is, but it sounded good at the time. ;)

The bedliner is holding up well. The undersides have not been sandblasted. However, the liner has worn off where the slider is used as a step by my passenger. And, there a couple of places where contact with immovable objects has scraped the paint off. To be expected.

This spring, I hope to clean up the affected areas, prime, and recoat the entire sliders with liner.

A few mods here and there and counting....
I painted my sliders the exact method and it has held up really well. I'll be doing the same this spring. Remove and respray with Rustoleum bed liner. I did touch up spots here and there but it needs a new coat. Cheap and effective.

I’m about to clean up my sliders for about the 4th time . Original powder coat sucked and they started rusting after the first winter . Pain in the ass because they are welded on :( I’ve used Rustoleum rusty metal primer ,Rustoleum rust reformer and bed liner . Nothing holds up to the North East winters . If had bolt on sliders I would take them off have them sand blasted and start over .

Rustoleum products are pretty much useless in NY winters. POR-15 or Chassis Saver is the only way to go. Topcoat with the rustoleum.
