1st Gen, 4 cyl, single cab, OME 880 vs 881

For what it is worth, I went with 881's and they were too tall for my reg cab 2.7

Swapped for 880 and they are great. Hold the weight of my front hitch and tray mounted winch just fine.

 

Very helpful. Gonna run a plate bumper on the front, either a CBI or an ARB, no winch, so I think the 880s are the way to go.

Trying to resurrect this thread a bit, I'm in the same boat, planning on using my end of year bonus to finally lift my 99 reg. cab 2.7. I plan on getting 5100 shocks all-around and it looks like the consensus is 880 coils in the front, even with planned addition of bumper/winch/dual batteries. Am I going to need new UCA's with that setup? What what about rear leaf options? I'm pretty sure my rear springs are shot and they need a full replacement.

 

I’ll let you know how mine goes. My lift was delivered last week. Dakar’s in the rear 880s up front. Hoping to get it done next week. I’ll post some before and after pics.

I put 880’s on mine (2.7) and lost a half inch from my spacer lift. Go 881 especially w/ the extra weight or use the first slot up on the Bilstein.....

 

880's and Dakars - nitrochargers. 235/85/16.
Reg cab 2.7 mt.
Truck has about 300lbs in the bed constant load with topper and sleep system. Loaded up to around 6-700lbs for adventure. I'm going to put the OME AAL in eventually to handle the load better.


Loaded for adventure with a tray winch on the front.

I have a single cab with an ARB front bumper and Smitty Built 9500k winch. The truck now has more of a rake due to the weight but also seems to bottom out some. I would like to get the front end height back to level with the rear and have no plans to go to tires bigger than my current 31x10.5. Which OME springs would be the best for this setup and should I get shocks also?

 

You have stock leaf springs in the rear? I might suggest going with a 5100 shock and using your stock springs, then dial in the preload to the height you want. You could also try 880 and see how they sit. My suspicion is that with any lift spring in the front and stock rear you will end up with bro-squat.

Or you could just go for a full OME kit with 880 on nitrochargers and dakar springs.

 

881s with 5100s. 4cyl ,reg cab, bumper, winch and it rides like a crown Victoria haha Very smooth offroad and bounces very calmly with minimal body vibrations, prob about 2 inches over stock with 33x10.5 tire.

The suspension is stock or at least OEM as far as I know. If I stayed with the stock spring would the truck still not feel front heavy or can the 5100 preload prevent that? Right now my rear is 2" higher than the front when measured from the center of the hub to the fender with about a 1/4" mean to the passenger side like most Tacomas.

Thanks for posting the pictures. What rear springs do you have? Does the truck feel ok with the 33s, stock gearing?

 

Rides fine with the 33s and stock gear.. Rear is stock with 2 inch block lol I know, havnt had the chance to buy Deavers or OME leafs yet.

 

What do you mean they were too tall? Too tall how?

 

I mean that they lifted my truck almost 4 inches, and completely fucked the angles of my CV's, UCA's, and UBJ's. The spindle would also hit the spring - you can see how close it was in the pic below.

I know. It was really a shock, and I'm not really sure how it happened when so many others have used this spring on the same truck as mine with no problems.

I swapped the springs for 880's, which are shorter, and they worked perfectly.

 

Also running 880s w/Bilsteins... very happy with this set up and would do it again.. rides great. She normally sits more level than the pic but loaded with camping gear so looking a bit low in the rear...

 

I have been running 881 with 5100 up front for 4 years, they are a little stiff unless you have some weight up front.
