Most effective way to haul a canoe or kayak (no trailer)

Here's the one I use (when I had my Chevy) for hauling around my canoe rig. I don't see these with the goal post sides being sold anymore but they are AWESOME!

 

I have the cheap trac rack that I cut down... It hauls 2 kayaks fine. A 16 foot canoe good. And a smallish jon boat pretty good too..

 

I use a Harbor Freight Truck Bed Extender to transport my 11.5' FeelFree Lure. Super stable, and way easier than trying to load the boat to the roof of my cap. This worked great at highway speeds for the 45 min ride home after I bought it.

 

People mount rooftop tents on the cab of double cab tacomas, so the cab can support the weight (at rest) of probably over half the weight of the tent and its occupants. A Prinsu or other comparable heavy duty rack could probably support more weight and do more than the oem Toyota rack, but here it is happily supporting the 140 lbs or so of my sailing canoe.

Great for those trips long or short when not needing to bring any more toys or camping gear.

 

I carry mine on a set of Yakima racks on the shell. Sitting this way, I can also tow my teardrop.

A word of warning - be careful when lifting the stern of the kayak when on the racks. I put a couple of dents in the cab roof by lifting the kayak too high and putting the bow handle into the roof.

As a remedy, I am selling this shell and getting a taller one.

I could have also put taller racks on the roof...

 

i built a pvc rack to put them on their sides, and tie them down well.
kinda tough now with the cap.

1 canoe and 2 kayaks, DCSB. Fits 3 kayaks for a day trip, but not much room for gear then.

 

I drive 203 SB and put my wavewalk kayak in the bed, with straps to hold it in place and a red flag on the end - I live in the burbs. Easy on easy off. I also put pontoon boats in the bed, I can carry at least 3, stacked on each other.

 

what about racks on the teardrop? or the simple foam block/strap method?...........................a shell is a terrible thing to waste, lol.

 

The teardrop racks aren't very far apart. This kayak is 12+ feet long (and 150 lbs.), and I want the supporting racks spaced as far apart as possible.

 

Wake, I’m wanting to do something similar but I’m afraid of hurting my gas mileage even more. I just bought and Rpod and my gas mileage dropped to an abysmal 9mpg. I know I could slow down a bit to help, but do you notice a significant drop in MPG when the yaks are on the roof while pulling the camper?

 

Here's my 120lbs worth of 2 12' ones of mine up top on the 05 AC....still have those as option for the 08 RC to leave bed free for gear/bikes/etc

 

Well here is my setup for hauling my kayaks, and bikes, when I go out playing.

 

I worked as a river guide for years so I've hauled canoes every way you could imagine. By far the best I have found is on an angle. I started with the boat resting on the tailgate and foam gunnel blocks on the cab - it carried well but I got a lot of damage. I built this rack and it works like a charm. No damage to the cab. Easy to load/unload the boat. Very secure tie down. Sadly I work more than paddle now but the rack works for that too.

I have 5 foot bed with bed extender can fit 2 12 foot and 2 10 foot in there with ratchet straps. I have plenty of dents in back of truck after throwing them after long day of drinking and floating
