This is why I got a SR5! It stands for sport rally 5 speed.

So I get the advantage of the sport, the ability to do rally style off-road and get 5 speed that is way better than the shift happy 6 speed you have. Best of world!

    Is it Friday yet?

I've been driving my 2020 Sport for a few months now - no regrets other than not a huge fan of the scooped hood. Otherwise, rides great and I find it comfortable!

On the SR5 vs Off Road debate, that is something that only the individual operator can determine for himself. Before I bought my truck, I drove several different Tacoma's and for the money, I chose the OR as the best value for the money. I don't own a truck to be used as a canyon carver, for me it is specifically a vehicle that has a large cargo area which allows me to carry a larger variety of things than a car or SUV. When I do have to go off road, I want all the capability that I can get and I didn't feel like compromising that capability over a few bucks that basically disappear into the overall price.

All this talk about how bitchin' manual transmissions are cracks me up. I suspect that I am much older than the vast majority of the members here and I have probably owned somewhere between 80-100 cars and trucks (and 40-50 motorcycles). I learned how to drive when I was 13 years old in a 1959 ford dump truck with a granny low, four speed manual transmission. I would say that the ratio of manual transmissions to autos that I have owned is about 50/50 auto/manual. On a practical level the autos are easier to drive, especially in traffic, and modern autos are overall much nicer to drive than the early two and three speed versions. Manual transmissions are definitely better in some limited applications but they ate NOT all that and a bag of chips to live with on a day to day basis.

I live in a hilly area and with my '21 Off Road and automatic transmission, I have not seen any of the excessive hunting for gears that is the persistent internet "fact" that is constantly perpetuated about the current Tacoma autos. I have to drive through two valleys and into a third just to go grocery shopping so I drive over a couple of fairly steep hills nearly everyday and my truck handles it with no problems whatsoever.

I'm not saying that if you really prefer a manual you shouldn't get one, but if you live in a more urban environment and have to deal with traffic on a daily basis, I bet you will eventually grow tired of shifting and having to constantly use the clutch in stop and go traffic. I currently have a 2015 Mustang GT with the six speed manual and a fair amount of engine mods that bring the RWH up to nearly 500 HP. It's not as fast as some cars out there, but it's fast enough to be loads of fun unless you are constantly having to stop at traffic lights or deal with heavy traffic. Driving in town is such a pain in the ass for me anymore that nowadays I only drive it out on the mountain back roads where shifting for corners is way more fun. My previous hot rod was a 1965 Pontiac GTO clone with a Muncie four speed, that I owned for over twenty years and before that I had a series of pre war Fords along with a ton of pickups, all with manual transmissions, so I think I can speak from a standpoint of having a pretty fair amount of experience with them.

The Sport was much cheaper than an equivalently equipped Offroad in my area.

I did not like the brake dive of the offroad either, and general road feel. I preferred the stiffer Sport, but i was planning on switching out the suspension anyways.

Locking rear diff would be something I would like to have. Crawl control was something i never really thought i would need.

Love the skewp. It was the biggest deciding factor.20210113_173810-01.jpg

You can also get the Off Road with a Factory painted rear bumper if it has BSM.

For me I had no choice other than a Sport or Pro as these are the only configuration for a double cab 6MT in Canada and the Pro was out of the budget. Also an OR Premium is $2k more than Sport in my locality. I would prefer spending this on an ARB locker. Plus I would replace the OR Bilstein suspension anyways. Just my situation.

Considering I planned on upgrading the suspension, wheels, and tires anyways plus I'm not doing hardcore rock crawling with a freaking $40,000 vehicle, no I'm happy with my Sport- especially since only the Sport is offered in an MT

SSO hybrid bumper, Warn winch, RCI skid trilogy, RRW sliders, everything in the cheap/free mods thread, and of course the frame recall work.
I got the OR and the only features that came with it that are still there and in use are the stickers on the bedside and the MTS and that only because it is there and I don't honestly know if it is helping or hindering when offroad so I could go without it. Crawl Control is a gimik and unused. Suspension was fully replaced with what I wanted (could have added to a sport), the e-locker rarely works and is slated to be replaced by an ARB unit. The hood scoop there or not is not meaningful to me, so I wouldn't care either way. The engine was OV tuned to 91 octane and runs as desired, so not sure if either version was different there but it wouldn't matter now anyway. Factory skids were tossed and replaced by RCI aluminum. RRW sliders replaced the nerf bar steps. The heated seats are nice, but Katskinz replaced the cloth so no OR trimmed fabric left. In the end, I could have saved a lot of money by getting the sport and adding all the stuff I already was replacing since the factory stuff was not up to the level that I desired. It did allow me to use it a lot more than I would have done with a sport while slowly doing the upgrades, but I could have afforded the upgrades faster if I hadn't dropped so much extra on an OR.
