To help with planning just take a group to the dbbb in Kentucky. I've run that a couple of times and it's awesome. Has areas that would definition require 4x4 and armor, but other sections are just beautiful trails.

You could also consider the KAT, the Kentucky adventure tour.

 

My buddy and I down here in Savannah have been talking about doing this loop. Nothing challenging, but a good excuse to make a weekend out of camping and exploring.
