Dude there is so much more to the story you are not telling. You realize we could pull your Tacoma out of the mud with that lever right? You "shifting" did not break it.

Grind a bevel on each part and TIG it back together. There's nothing wrong with the steel itself, it failed at a stress riser. The machined ball end was welded (maybe furnace brazed in large batches) to the lever. There was probably a small nick or dent in the heat affected zone that initiated a tear and it just grew until it failed. Grind it, weld it, love it. Especially if you can get a bud to do it for free, it's a 10 minute repair tops

Heat treated steel would be evenly colored, blue or otherwise. That blueing is uneven and toward to edges like it was made when cut/ground or welded. The surface finish looks like grinding/cutting marks. Something weird going on there.

Broke one in a Dune Buggy once. Like others have said, weld it or sleeve it then replace it when the new part is available.

In pa. But holiday weekend and have to work so by the time I get to a welder and have it done, part might be here. Only takes a minute to install. But I am going to have it welded and keep for a backup

This right here. That was a spot welded part and the spot welds failed. Line the two pieces up, scribe them, grind a V unto each piece, clamp them together and weld them up with a decent weld. Done for life.

If you go this route make sure you scribe the two pieces in the correct orientation! Story time.... Highschool me decided he wanted a short throw shifter but didn't want to pay for it, so decided I would cut out a section of mine and weld it back below the boot to atleast give the appearance of of one. I was so proud with the job that I'd done until I bolted it back up and it was pointed towards my glove box! HAHAH... I had to cut and re-weld it, good as new!
