Anything welding

I understand there are factors like geography and care of equipment but what are some rough numbers for a used Millermatic 251?

I have been seeing 2k-3k, no bottle, no regulator, just gun and lead. Screaming deal? Fair? Might as well buy new price?

I have a Hobart 210MVP but looking for something a bit bigger, better duty cycle.

 

I personally wouldn’t pay more than $1500 for a used one. Unless you NEED one right away. I paid $1000 for my practically new 252 and $900 for my last 251. Both prices probably aren’t super realistic, but deals are out there. Personally I’d look for a 252 over a 251 if you’re considering spending 2k. 1700-2000 is a pretty normal used price for a 252 in SoCal

 

Exciting week full of rolling in mud welding up busted water lines, busted Jackets on reactors, and 2 mirror pipe welds that passed inspection. Time for a fire, Buffalo trace, and beer!

 

Looks like your neighbors to the South are in the same ballpark on price. To bad it's not Greenville, NC. I went to East Carolina Univ (in Greenville NC) for a couple semesters before I moved back to Indiana.

It is all supply and demand how good a shape the machine where it is coming out of.

and How bad the seller needs the money if they ask $3000.00 and have time to wait .

Always put any used welders through the paces full control and output no shielding gas ask one of your friends for some self shielded wire or lug your cylinder and wire .

Just how much more output and duty cycle can you live with?? How big of wire would you like to run .045 .052??

Getting into serious plate welding 3/8" +

 

Seems like if it's 5 years or more older, $1600 would be on the high end.

I used the Hobart Iron Man 240 a few weeks back. I think that was $1700 new when my buddy bought it 2 months ago. Why not go that route?

All my equipment is Miller, but imnot ashamed to endorse Hobart.

 

Thanks for all the input. I appreciate it. The $900 deal is insane. I can’t even find a Miller 211 at that price. I will just keep my eye out.

 

I do like Hobart. I will check out some of their larger welders. I have been using my 210MVP that I got used for over six years now and it has been great.

 

That's about what they run in Florida too. There's a 251 near me for 1800, and another one near me for 3000. Both of those prices are high though IMO. I bought a ragged out 251 10 years ago for $400 that hasn't skipped a beat. But I haven't seen a deal THAT good since

 

The only option my Hobart doesn’t have that an equivalent Miller does that I want is a rheostat style power setting. I constantly find myself switching between power setting on my Hobart or grossly adjusting speed on my weld. I will check to see if the 240 is the same way.

 

Do you mostly do powerhouse work? I don’t really weld for a living, but I do build aluminum conductors from time to time. I built 36 sections of bus like this a couple years back. And I’m building the double conductor ips bus for a 500kv position upgrade I’m Working on now.

 

The 240 has infinite adjustment on both heat and speed.

I don’t really take a lot of pics but here are some of the few through out the years. Most of career has been pipe welding in production settings. About 75% has been on rotators and the rest has been out of position. No weldporn but it’ll hold

 

I was about to post the crappy little weld I made this morning when I saw these beautiful welds, but then figured what the hell, I will anyway haha. Ordered a metal holster for my Baofeng handheld and the threaded hole in the washer was too big for the ram mount I bought, so I cut out a new rectangular washer out of 1/8" and tapped the right size hole, and then welded it to the existing washer. It's little stuff like this that gets me as excited as the big projects; being able to weld has opened up a world of opportunities and creative solutions that didn't exist before.

hey, as long as it works that's what matters. Besides, I had a "pretty weld" bust on a test when I first started so good looks doesn't always mean strong welds.

From working with it today I really like it.

it is heavy. I wouldn’t get one shipped, definitely do store pickup. Comes with adjustable feet, but I had some casters that fit so I put it on wheels. Works nicely that way.

The various fab stuff it comes with will take some time to find all the uses for. The included clamps are ok but require attaching a nut from underneath. I quickly sourced an M16 bolt and converted a HF clamp.

I’m pleased with the purchase. Especially at $150 + tax. I can already see how this will make a number of things easier/faster than with my HF folding welding table.
