I've been lucky enough to be in the Pet Industry for almost 10 years, and have a very different perspective. I've worked with animal behaviorists, and professional working dog handlers during my career. Remote collars are necessary for CERTAIN applications. That does not mean that everyone who uses correction collars should be using them (in fact most owners that use them shouldn't be), but there is certainly a place for them.

Although I didn't spend 10 years, I have worked in the industry as well. However, my comment was regarding association between the device and desired behavior and why it’s not always desirable.

A great example of desirable behavior is the use of a harness in tracking. There’s a job to do and a reward at the end (if successful).

Some hunting dogs wear gps collars for location tracking during the hunt.

Good point. I don’t think I used the correct usage of words. They “behave better” all around. With or without the collars. However, when the collar is on, they are on their A game. They pull less now, without the collar but there are times they still get excited and tug towards a cat, squirrel, etc.. with the collar that rarely happens (shocking or not). Prior to the collar it occurred 40 times a walk. I also know it’s correctable without the collar and enough patience and training too. I understand what you’re saying, I’m no expert by the way and was just giving my experience.

The downside of my time in the industry are those who use them (more specifically shock collars) when they shouldn't, hitting the button like a TV remote on a Sunday afternoon. Trying to train a then fearful and confused dog becomes impossible once they shut down.

    That’s frickin sad

When I adopted my 3 yr old pup a year ago, she was a mess, untrained, couldn’t settle, she actually pulled me off my feet while I was walking her.

Friends said get a prong collar, use a shock collar..

No way I could do that to her, I had no idea what her life was like before.
I made a commitment to her and trained and trained and trained, all positive.
She learned to trust me, she knows all her basic obedience, and walks pretty well on the leash now.
Sure there is room for improvement, but considering where we started I really can’t ask for more, but knowing my pup she’ll give me more..
I’m proud of her and proud of myself for hanging in there, it’s worth it.

My avatar pup refused to walk with a halti. when I'd go to put it on her, she'd turn around and go to bed. But it did its job, made her easier to walk.

It was a mess. The boxer had a treat that didn’t agree with her, so the carpet cleaner came out at 10:30 and again at 12:30 to clean up dog puke. That woke the malinois up, so he had to go back out and then wouldn’t settle back down the rest of the night. We had a series of naps! LOL

    Yeah.
So we've been in this house for 3+ years now. It already had a dog door going to the garage, and one from the garage into the back yard. Our female Shiba has always used it. Our older male would use it to come in but never to go out.

Magically, yesterday, he began using it to go out. And kept going in and out. Like wow, what a new discovery! Last night he got lazy again and went to the back door. I told him no, and pointed to the doggy door and told him to go out there, and he went right to it and ran through. Shibas are weird frickin dogs.
