I'm talking to a dealer about a 2020 TRD off-road that is headed for one of his stores. It is currently slated to have power tailgate lock installed on it. I want this feature, and I don't mind going the DIY route. My son would enjoy the project (but we have other projects to do too).

My question: Since this is a dealer installed option, how good are the dealer installations? Do they splice the wiring with those junk clips? Is the wire routing typically good?

I'm sure the sales guy will assure it'd be a flawless install, so I haven't asked.

If they'll do it at least as good as I would, I'm inclined to let them. If I'd do it better, I'd rather DIY. So I'd like to hear from those of you who have had the dealer install them.

I have the factory kit but haven’t installed it yet. It looks pretty straightforward. It’s a plug and play kit so there’s no wires to splice. Kit ran me about $140.

So there is a real Toyota kit with no splicing. Great! I thought I had read that the dealers were using aftermarket parts and there was no official kit.

    Thanks guys!

A few OE parts from fancy trucks
Results will depend on what parts are used and who installs it.

Now that there is a Toyota PnP kit your odds of having a clean setup are higher. And should be under Toyota warranty as well.

Relatively speaking, this is a very straightforward plug-n-play add on. I did it myself in about a half hour with hand tools.

If you or your son is moderately handy, just go for it yourself and enjoy getting to know the underside of the truck

    All the things!
I'm sure the dealer will use an OEM kit. They run about $140, but I'd suspect the dealer will mark it up and charge for labor (1.5 hrs). The kit is completely plug-n-play and there will be no splices or cuts made.

I'd HIGHLY recommend you tell them to not install that option and keep the money (assuming you get reimbursed the dealer add on cost). Buy the kit yourself and install it yourself. It's super easy and even comes with an install manual. I took my sweet time and it only took me 1.5 hrs.

    Good luck!

    Thanks for the input guys.

I wouldn't mind doing it myself, but since its going to be the factory kit w/ warranty, I left it on the truck.

Assuming he confirms his latest offer + TTL, really includes their doc fee, I've agreed to a deal.

The truck arrives at port Feb 3. I should have it by mid Feb.

Did you ever get this done? What was the charge from the dealer.

I installed mine yesterday, it's completely plug and play and took about 90 mins.

Very easy to do and you'll save at least $100 in labor plus any dealer markup on the part.

Shit, post is over a year old.

I read the complete thread on the lock kit and since I was told the dealer would have to install it on my new truck purchase, I planned on buying the kit and doing it myself for the experience and to save money. However, then I confirmed that if they did the install on my new truck it would be covered on the 3/36 warranty, but if I did it, I only got the short Toyota parts warranty. I let the dealer do it and cautioned them not to break any trim clips or do a sloppy job. They did it right.

Yes, I picked up the truck nearly a year ago, with dealer installed power tailgate lock. I don't recall what cost was of this option.

I was thinking the same thing. Warranty coverage is nice. Having the locking tailgate from the day I get the truck is nice. It would be a nice project if the weather is nice, but may not be much fun in February.
