I have a 2005 that's had a slow head gasket leak since I bought it 4 years ago.

Water sound in the dash, mustard on the oil cap, glycol in the oil analysis reports, but it's been running great and coolant consumption hasn't been any worse than a cup every few weeks.

My son used it to move back to school last week and over 10 hours of driving it burned through 1/2 gallon, so I'm starting to look for a replacement engine.

I know that the interchange says I need a 2005-2011 engine, but the 2012-2015 almost has better availability locally and certainly lower mileage.

What's the difference between 2011 and 2012? Is the difference anywhere in the short block or in the ancillaries that can be swapped over? Any reason not to get the newer engine?

i believe there is a slight difference in the heads for the addition of the SAIS injection ports on the 12+ v6's though that might be just in the exhaust manifolds. But beyond that, the shortblock should be identical.

I looked that up and it looks like it plugs into the manifold (block-off plate shown). So the only difference is the exhaust manifold?

I seem to remember the head being slightly different with a lil extra port for that air injection rail on top of the exhaust manifold. someone will know for sure on here.

Bump. I found a low-mile 2015 motor for my 2005. Any reason it won't work besides swapping the exhaust manifold?

    Bump.

I still need to swap my engine on the 2005.

It seems clear you can substitute a 2012-2015 motor if you swap the exhaust manifold with it and block the SAIS port.

PROBLEM IS that most dismantlers will not sell a used motor with the cats, so the exhaust is not included.

SO, will the earlier manifolds work with the port being blocked in the late head directly. I haven't seen a late head.

From that thread "12-15 Tacoma engines have different heads with holes for the SAIS system than the previous models"

I understand that, the 2012+ headers are meant to go with the 2012+ motor because of the SAIS ports.

Can the SAIS ports be blocked so that pre-2012 headers can be used? Block-off plates, plugs? Any photos?

The other workaround would be to have the dismantler cut the cats off and keep the manifold with the motor, weld the old cats back on. I'm trying to avoid that.

Here's what I was looking for.

It looks like the SAIS port on the 2012+ head would be easy to plug when using a 2011 exhaust. Pictured is a one of each.

You can use the 12-15 engine. Just swap the exhaust and valve covers fro your engine. Everything else is the same

I picked up a complete 2015 4.0 engine yesterday to replace my 2005. When I say complete I mean everything that hooks to the engine is there and the guy gave me the 2015 computer with it. Could I not just swap all of it and avoid have to use my old intake and blocking off the SAIS port

Hello everyone I am not new to the forum however this is my first post. I have an 11 DCSB TRD sport I am currently contemplating getting a set of OBX headers and I have found a great deal on a set but they are for the 12-15 models my question is will the 2.5 gen headers work on a 2nd gen

The SAIS in the 2012-2015s is a known failure point. Some people go so far as to delete SAIS entirely to avoid these issues, including blocking off the special ports for it.

Lots of threads on it here on TW forums. Here's one:
