A few minutes ago, I had to go somewhere in my truck. I went out there, and kept pulling on the door latch and it wouldn't open! Then I remembered that this morning, I did what someone earlier here posted, in that one can "turn off" the RF signal by holding down the lock button while pressing unlock twice. So my FOB was off. I pulled it out, and clicked on unlock and was able to get into the truck. So it DOES work, but even doing this, defeats the purpose of having keyless ignition in the first place. Man, I was really liking not having to worry about unlocking my steering wheel lock like I did on my old truck, or doing anything other than just going out and getting into my truck and pushing the button. Now, though, it seems that I have to figure something out that is more secure. I really appreciate the original poster of this thread, as well as the person who wrote about the ability to lock the FOB itself!

    To each their own.
I think the Faraday pouch is a great idea, compared.
It would be an addition to my RFID Wallet.
I would gladly pay $50 for a classy pouch.

I would not want credit for posting the method for turning off the FOB.
How much do FOBS cost, for say, wearing out the buttons from using them more than necessary?
Regardless, I will buy a pouch.
    YMMV :p

Ya’ll are overthinking this. While it may provide some level of protection, it’s usually not how thefts happen.
You’d be better off covering up your VIN# from any outside visibility and getting an OBD port lock.

They take a pic of your [and others] VIN# one night. Go cut physical keys, come back the next night, open the door, hook-up to the ODB, program the key to the ignition, and they’re gone.
This happens in minutes and is the most popular way of theft in NA.

ODB port lock is the best line of defence. They see that and they’ll move on cause you’ve just added unnecessary time to their work, while the next guy didn’t. TIME is the biggest theft deterrent.

Trying to understand how this can prevent the left of your fob signal. So help me out here. You need the key fob to drive, with that said the fob can't be in the security wallet while your driving, so couldn't anyone with the proper scanning hardware literally copy grab your fob 'signal' while sitting in traffic or at a light? This solution makes sense for a key fob sitting in your house or office, but not if you are out and about. If someone really want to scan you key I'm thinking they will.

Actually, you don't need the FOB to drive, only to start the truck. Once you start the truck, you can either turn off the FOB or put it back into the RF pouch you may buy. Now that being said, once you turn off the FOB or hide it in a pouch, then you will see the flashing "triangle" in the dash, and a message saying "key not detected". But otherwise, you can certainly keep driving the truck if you aren't annoyed to death by that flashing light and message! Robmotive [youtube channel, Robmotive] actually did a complete testing of the FOB and what happens in various scenarios, such as removing the battery out of the fob and then using it to start the truck via the instructions, or starting the truck, and then, taking the fob away from the truck, say in your garage, and then getting back into the truck and driving off. It was a great video and shows visually, what you can and cannot do with or without the fob. Here is a link to the video:

Why not get a steering wheel locking device such as a CLUB? I have never seen a stolen Tacoma, car thieves around here don't seem interested with Tacomas.

Maybe buy some wire mesh, put it on all 6 sides of the inside of your console, and make your center console a Faraday cage? Then you can just drop the keyfob in there after you get going every time.

I didn't realize you could drive without the FOB enabled once it's running, my bad, thank you for that info. A custom wire mesh cup holder or one built for the rectangle in the console sounds like product that would sell.

Either they are going to steal it or they are not. I got bigger things to worry about.
And I believe this really a commercial advertisement, right down to which brand you should get and which ones you should avoid.

    I know this is the 3rd gen forum but after having my 2015 stolen I learned a few things;

1: Insurance, go through your policy make sure they will cover you if theft occurs also if you have any mods you want covered you're going to have to add those onto your policy.

2: Unplugging the fuel pump is hard but if your parked in a sketchy area its worth the time. (this is most likely the reason I got my truck back, as the lowlifes only made it three miles before ditching the vehicle)

3: Manual transmissions are not theft resistant.

4: If you have to keep things in your truck lock them up tight nothing is theft proof, the goal here is to make it not worth their time.

I would also like to add stealing a fob signal is ridiculously hard for your average tweaker that does not have the required brain cells to use the equipment. If they did Toyota security system uses a rolling code that changes every 5 - 15 minutes. Not theft proof but definitely makes it not worth the thieves time.

RFID wallets are a solution to a problem that’s never been documented to actually happen. Great marketing gimmick though.

“According to Siciliano, researchers have been able to expose vulnerabilities in RFID credit cards in controlled environments. But “there have been no documented cases of someone actually using [an RFID] reader to steal a credit card,” says Patrick Sweeney, author of “RFID for Dummies.”
