Is there a big difference in strength slash weight in say a cbi overland rack or just racks in general, In steel vs one in aluminum? Is the aluminum worth the price?

I have the cbi aluminum and its pretty light. I went aluminum just because of all the crap i already have weighing my truck down. The cross bars are steel but the rest is aluminum. I think you save around 40 ish pounds.

Aluminum is prone to stress fractures on the welds during overland use for prolonged periods. I know many companies who use aluminum usually go with a billeted interlocking system to eliminate welds since it’s the weak point. (Go Fast Campers) I like aluminum because it does not rust and saves weight. Steel is tried and true. You don’t need a special welder and can easily hit it with a rattle can. Just my $0.02 I’m sure more technical experienced folks will chyme in.
